Re: Dear hubby's stem cell transplant saga

Ellen and Margie, thanks! I was a little worried about the fever, but the nurse at clinic this morning wasn't so I guess it is normal at this stage. It is hanging around 99.3 F (37.4 C) all day today. I hope this is an indication of engraftment starting.

You are correct, I do feel a great deal of pressure taking care of him. I don't want to miss anything. I so appreciate all of your tips and advice, encouragement, etc. All of you. :)

We were told not to worry unless the fever hits 100.4 F (38.0 C). I am keeping a close eye on it. How long does it take to feel better after engraftment starts?

Dogmom,

Reactions and recovery to transplant are so variable. Some people are doing zumba after 30 days, and aside from not having hair, look and feel normal. Others take longer to recover. He will recover at his own pace. Try not to anticipate how he will feel tomorrow or next week or next month. Everyone is different, and you have to take it one day at a time. I had a really hard time with nausea, which lasted for months afterwards. Most people do not have that. But, to be fair, I was prone to that before.

I have a feeling he is beginning to engraft since he running a low grade fever. That fever may go a bit higher, say to 101 F or so. That's about where my fever topped out. They will check him for infection, throat culture, blood, stool and urine. Don't be surprised. It's routine.

Try not to think of timetables. This is a very individual thing, and he will get there in his own time. I have a feeling that once he engrafts, things will go very smoothly. He is doing fine.

Well. Temp up to 103 F (39.4 C). Needless to say we are in ER. Good thoughts please.

Dogmom,

He is probably engrafting. I was in the hospital, so they treated my fever right away. It probably would have been higher if I were not there 24/7. Hang in there! Don't be surprised if they keep him overnight. Try to take advantage and get some rest. All will be under control at the hospital. He probably needs IV fluids due to the fever. I received a TON of fluids. My blood pressure got pretty low, and they had to pump me up with fluids to support that. Had a couple of days of not being allowed to walk around due to the low pressure. He will stabilize, you will see. I am thinking about both of you today. By next week at this time, his counts will be great!

Dear Cathy,

Best wishes coming your way for getting the fever under control. I had the same problem after my stem cell transplant, and was in an isolation unit. I had a fever and was also being tested for C. diff. Needless to say, this was not a great experience, but it turned out that I did not have any sort of infection. The fever was thought to have been caused by the Neupogen injections being used at the time to raise the blood cell counts. As I recall, I was given fluids by IV to control the dehydration I was having at that time.

Thanks so much everyone. His temp is down to 101 F (38.3 C) and they pushed fluids hard and he is feeling better. They have started him on antibiotics just in case. He is also going to be admitted at least for tonight. I hope it is just engraftment along with dehydration.

I have tried over the past few days to push fluids, but he just wasn't able to do it. We are just waiting in the ER for a bed.

You guys are the best.

We finally got admitted to our room. His temp keeps going up and down and he has a rash on his back. I am afraid he has picked up an infection. He really is having a rough time. Everything has gone so well with his treatment and up to now with transplant. I guess the other shoe has dropped. :(

My best thoughts are with you! I'm hoping the fever and rash are a sign that he is engrafting.

We are waiting for the doctor to come in. His temp bounced around overnight from 103 to 99 and in between. He needs more platelets today and his hemoglobin (HGB) is 7.1 so I am sure blood is not far behind, but at this stage I can live with that as standard. His WBC is < 0.1 so still no upward movement.

They are giving him fluid support as he still is not feeling like eating or drinking much. He has had not been throwing up in the last 24 hours but has had a couple watery stools. They are testing him for C. diff. I so hope this is engraftment. I can't help but have a bad feeling.
