Re: Dear hubby's stem cell transplant saga
Whew, did all the meetings with the stem cell transplant team and I will have to say talking with them one on one made the process seem a lot less scary for me and my husband.
Today he goes for his post treatment bone marrow biopsy, history and physical, and labs. That will be all until next Wednesday when we meet with our myeloma specialist to sign consent forms and find out all the results of his test, scans, and bone marrow biopsy. This will be the final go for SCT. I hope nothing shows to delay it. He is so ready.

Re: Dear hubby's stem cell transplant saga
Bone marrow biopsy, H/P, and blood draw done! This is the last of our pretesting for SCT. It has been a very busy week.
Our next appointment is next Thursday afternoon for a 3-hour class on how to care for the central line / central venous catheter (CVC), general aftercare, etc.
Everyone on the team seems to think with his clinical presentation, last labs, and the marrow flowed very freely this time in the biopsy (the first time they could barely get any due to the myeloma making it "sticky" with protein) that the transplant will be a go! Good thoughts!

Re: Dear hubby's stem cell transplant saga
Well, we go to our caregiver class tomorrow to learn how to take care of the CVC among other things. I have read my protocol info from my information notebook and am ready as I will ever be.
I am a hands on kinda learner so I think I will feel better about it once I actually see and practice on the model in class. Wish me luck!

Re: Dear hubby's stem cell transplant saga
Well, we went to the caregiver and patient class yesterday. It was scheduled for 3 hours but only lasted about one. The poor guy had only been there 3 weeks and it was his first class.
When it came to the port care and flushing, he showed us what a port looked like on the dummy and pretty much said I am not good with these so I will not show you anything. The info he did go over was all in our transplant books and had been covered by the rest of the transplant team in their meetings with us. He said to get the nurses to tell us about the ports, so I have studied all the instructions in our book and watched videos. I will get more info from the nurses.
We meet with our doctor next Wednesday to go over test results and sign consent forms. The port placement on Friday with first Neupogen injection. Getting ever closer to transplant day!

Re: Dear hubby's stem cell transplant saga
Well, all his tests are good and there is no detectable myeloma in his bone marrow. They said he is in a great place for the transplant! It is a go! We go Friday to have the port put in and his first Neupogen injection. We're off!

Re: Dear hubby's stem cell transplant saga
Well, the central line / central venous catheter (CVC) is in and he got his first Neupogen injection. I have shifts at the hospital for the next couple of days so our son is going with him for injections. They are going to have man bonding time...
We will go in Monday early for blood draws to check levels to see if we can harvest that day, but they think more than likely Tuesday will be the day. SCT getting so close ....

Re: Dear hubby's stem cell transplant saga
Hi Cathy,
Glad things are proceeding well. Best wishes to your husband and you during the transplant process and I hope he gets a very, very long remission from it. He is very lucky to have you in his corner!

Re: Dear hubby's stem cell transplant saga
Harvest day is tomorrow. We go back tonight for a Mozobil injection at 8:30. They are harvesting enough for 2 transplants. We hope to get it in one day, but if not back again Wednesday. He is feeling pretty good still so far even with the Neupogen injections. He hasn't had to take anything for pain.
Chris, thanks for your good wishes.

Mozobil injection done. We have about an hour, give or take, drive back from the clinic and he was running for the bathroom. Hope it is short lived for his sake.
