Zometa side effects: are they really that bad?

by Wayne K on Sat Apr 05, 2014 10:55 am

I'm due to have my first treatment in a few days and after reading the side effects it sounds like Russian Roulette. What is your experience?

I had a significant reaction to Zometa. Beginning the day after the infusion I had severe pelvic/hip pain to point that I could barely walk. This lasted for 3.5 weeks. I switched to Aredia and had no further issues. I understand that this type of reaction is rare but not unheard of.

I have had 5 treatments to date of Zometa and have had no significant side effects except for very mild flu like symptoms on two occasions.

My Hubby just had his first Zometa infusion on Friday 4th. Last night he got very sick -- temp, chills, sweats and body aches. He has been on several different chemo drugs over the past three years, and nothing has made him this sick.

From reading the experiences of others it looks like some have a hard time and others not. The question that I can't seem to find an answer for is, how long do the side effects last?

The first one or two treatments I had flu symptoms, (chills, muscle aches etc) but then as the treatments went on it got better. I would just come home after my treatment and feel sleepy, take a nap on the couch, but no real sickness.

Given all that I'm reading regarding trials and the experience of those on the forum, I'm certainly up on the fence, so to speak. My kidney function isn't great and my dental situation isn't either. On the other side, my recent fracture isn't something I would want to repeat, especially if it involved a major bone.

I have the upmost faith in my doctor, I have no reason not too, but I am going to bring up my concerns and get his opinion on what I will likely face if I don't get the treatment.

Hi Wayne. i didn't have any side effects from Zometa, and I was on it for 4 1/2 years. It helped fill in all of the lesions. However, I just convinced my oncologist to stop it for now because I'm afraid of the jaw-bone death.

My husband has been on Zometa for almost 3 years (I think now it's only every 6 months). He felt horrible after the first infusion (bone pain, fever, malaise) and dreaded receiving future ones. After the first one he was never bothered by side effects again.
