Re: 19th anniversary of multiple myeloma diagnosis
Good stuff Gary. Keep up the good fight.
I was diagnosed in March 2012 and have been through the entire thing from watch and wait to an autologous stem cell transplant to total remission. I reached a zero M-protein on September 6, 2013 (stem cell transplant completed June 2013) and I stayed at zero from that day until early this year when I could tell it was coming back....confirmed in June.
I took Revlimid the entire time but in October 2015 my oncologist suggested that I could stop because of the adverse side effects. I had been told by a family doctor to never stop the Revlimid so we compromised and I reduced from 10 mg to 5 mg. It only took a few months for the multiple myeloma to fire back up at that dose, so we immediately went back to 10 mg. Last check my M- protein was 1.9 g/dl (19 g/l). Going for an update next Monday. I have no doubt that I will achieve similar results this time around, and I am inspired now hearing your 19 year story. What a target for us all to shoot for! Thanks for sharing.
All that to say this is live every day like it is your last one. Every day that I wake up breathing is a blessing!

Re: 19th anniversary of multiple myeloma diagnosis
Gary, that is fantastic!
I was diagnosed about a year ago, at age 61. I had about four months of induction (initial) therapy, followed by an autologous stem cell transplant. I am maintaining now with Pomalyst and dexamethasone. I have suffered no discernable damage to bones or other organs. I remain strong, aside from the side effects of the meds. I hope all of this bodes well for a long survival, perhaps as long as yours.
Congratulations!
Donnie

Re: 19th anniversary of multiple myeloma diagnosis
My husband has multiple myeloma since 9 years ago. He had a stem cell transplant. It is now wearing off. He is 77. We live in Sydney, Australia. I think if it is found early you have a better chance. My husband had smoldering myeloma for a few years before hand. We feel he was lucky.

Re: 19th anniversary of multiple myeloma diagnosis
Gives me such hope being able to read and hear about people living 10, 15, 20+ years with multiple myeloma.
My mother was just diagnosed last week and it has been incredibly difficult trying to adjust to all of the new information being hurled at us. I think it is natural for one's brain to immediately go to the worst case scenario when news like this presents itself, so it's massively comforting to hear that there is hope!

Thanks, once again! As I have said, with me, it's just one day at a time (sometimes one hour!).
