Re: The cost of Revlimid - what do you pay?

by Denis H on Thu Feb 16, 2012 4:16 pm

reframingham, I guess it has already been posted on this thread, but I suggest seeking out patient assistance from Celgene or Chronic Disease Fund, http://www.gooddaysfromcdf.org. I started on my wife's health plan this year as I have been out of work since 2011 with Myeloma. I was approved by CDF to cover 7k for Revlimid. Our plan's out of pocket max for the year is 10k. So its a great benefit to us. Hopefully your plan has some type of out pocket max. I have been lucky since diagnosis to have a plan that pays in full after hitting the outpocket. I had back surgury last year in January and hit my out pocket then. All chemo, rev, and SCT were of no charge for the whole year.

I am on Medicare and have Regence MedAdvantage Enhanced coverage. Revlimid is a Tier 5 Rx for which I would pay 33% for each prescription until I reach the catastropic level which means that I have to pay $4700 out of pocket for the year. Once at the catastropic level, I would pay 5% of the cost for a Tier 5 Rx. I am not taking any chemo drugs but do have Multiple Sclerosis; so I hit the catastrophic level usually by late February or March.

I don't have last year's figures in front of me; but if memory serves me correctly, my Rx costs were somewhere around $41,000+ last year and I was out of pocket close to $4900 for the year of 2011 ( I have one prescription that is not covered due to Medicare rules).

Hope this helps on the Medicare coverage question. Of course, one needs to check their own plan for more precise coverage details.

Thanx Mark,Denis,Kay,Greg,etc.
(It seems to go no foreever) for your replies.
My doctor at Dana Farber is Dr. P. Richardson. He has agreed to speak to Celegene about the cost problem. Hopefully he will get results. He stated that with his and others they have helped to make Celegene a multibillion (?) dollar company therefore, he feels they owe him.
I do not know about an Oral Chemotherapy Access Bill in Mass. ,I will pursue this. Iis a small comfort to see how many others are in the same boat as I. It is outrageous that drug companies can charge these wild amounts for drugs to be used by NONCUREABLE (so far) CANCER patients regardless their ability to pay. No wonder insurance costs so much.

My wife has been on the low dose Revlimid since November 2011. We just got another shipment of 21 pills yesterday. Cost was $10,000, but we only paid a $25 co-pay. Hard to believe that price is justified. I'm sending my congressman (Speaker Boehner) a letter. Won't do any good, but it will make me feel better.

reframingham,

I will have to look and see if there is a centralized list. Usually potential Conflict of Interest statements are on research papers when the Doctors present research at ASCO and ASH. I knew some Doctors at Dana Farber were listed, so I checked for you. That is great to Dr. Richardson agreed to try and help out.

My Doctors treatment plan pushed the limits of my Insurance contract, so I know the Hospital and the Insurance Company had to work out a deal so I would not have to pay anything extra. I agreed to go on a Study that mandated I have more blood tests so I guess they could put some of the costs into the Research budget. I would have participated in the study anyway. I am not sure if it is legal or possible to do something like that with the cost of drugs. When I saw your email, I was hoping they could have worked something out so your costs would have been lowered, or better yet eliminated.

I will look and see if there is a list. I feel terrible when I read stories/talk to patients at the Hospital that describe how much financial burden the cost of these drugs imposes on them.

My Rev was a $100 copay until out of pocket is reached.

Keep in mind, on the Oral Chemo question, it is my understanding that the law will apply to your insurance company based on the state they are headquartered in.

We live in WI which does not yet have the law, but my insurance is based out of Washington state, which passed the law in 2011. Therefore, I am covered to the point of a $100 copay until Out of pocket is reached. (never takes long , does it?)

i think the price is quilt different for US market and China market, the price for China market is as below:

5 mg x 30 pcs US$180.--
10mg x 30 pcs US$280.--
15mg x 30 pcs US$430.--
25mg x 30 pcs US$570.--
