Hi Jeff, I'm not surprised they are considering send your wife to WVU in the north end of WV;
I live in a city about three times the size of Charleston WV, the day they found the large lesion in my dad's spine by MRI, they put him in an ambulance drove him 60 miles/100km to London, Ontario, were we have one of Canada's largest trauma and teaching hospital, for urgent surgery.

You and your family will be in my prayers. Thank you for sharing about your faith. Just hearing about your story and your faith has helped me already. God bless you all.
Re: Wife newly diagnosed - how advanced is her disease?
Thanks Little Monkey,
I don't make it that far west. My wife and I have been fishing on Lake Nipissing several times. We spent our 32nd wedding anniversary there this year, I'm so glad we had that opportunity. We both like to fish and love the beauty of the area. She won't go to Quebec with me, something about being 69 km in the bush just wasn't appealing to her.
Anyway I'm attempting to attach the results of her bone biopsy. Can anyone tell me what the B2 results mean?

Beta2 microglobulin (B2M) is basically a surrogate measure of multiple myeloma tumor burden in one's body. It is generally used for prognostic purposes and staging when one is first diagnosed.
By itself, a B2M value of 5.53 mcg/ml puts your wife at stage III on the multiple myeloma ISS staging scale.
BUT be clear that staging with multiple myeloma isn't as significant as it is with other cancers, so try not to worry about this number and ignore the survival stats (each person is quite unique when it comes to multiple myeloma). Once your wife starts drug treatment, her various markers (including her B2M) will likely improve quite rapidly.
See this thread for more information, including Dr. Libby's comments.

Thank you Multibilly
My head is spinning from all of this. I'm very uninformed and I am trying to get as much information as possible. My lack of knowledge scares me.
It is important to me for us to be able to make an informed decision about the treatment and the quality of life for my Wife.
I might look at things a bit different than most given my 23 years in the medical field.
I want quality of life for my wife, if that means that she will leave this earth sooner. Well I would rather she live the rest of her life happy not sick and in pain.
The decision is hers to make, I just need to be able to explain the situation and options to her.

Hi Jeff,
There are people that are diagnosed as stage three multiple myeloma who, after treatment, live relatively normal lives, moderate hiking etc.

Re: Wife newly diagnosed - how advanced is her disease?
Hello, thanks to all who have posted. I have been to mentally and physically exhausted to do any research. So I am just going to post what we have found out today.
The bone marrow results came back, the showed 90% plasma to bone marrow. I haven't seen the lab results as of yet.
My Wife will finish her radiation on Wednesday and start chemo on Thursday. The Oncologist has been consulting with Michael Craig, MD at WVU medical center. He is supposed to be an expert, we will see him in Morgantown after Christmas we were told today. He will be discussing stem cell transplant, we were told that when my Wife is in remission. We will go to Morgantown and will be there for 30 days while getting the transplant.
He gave us papers on what chemo he plans on using, I forgot them at the hospital tonight. I will pick them up in the morning when I go back to spend the day with my Wife. I do know that a steroid is being used with everything else.
