Re: Wife newly diagnosed - how advanced is her disease?

Multibilly,

I hear and understand what you are saying, I appreciate it as well.

I will absolutely look at our options, I just have to, as bad as I hate to say it. make sure I have the resources – meaning the funds – for what we choose as an option.

I know a local guy who owns his own business and a plane. He flies his wife to Cancer Treatment Centers of America. I know my wife's life is worth millions to myself, our children and grandchildren. But the hard facts of life is, we are living paycheck to paycheck as it is on a paramedic's wages. I'm supporting our disabled daughter and her three children mostly on my paycheck. She helps with the bills with her social security income. But the lion's share falls on my shoulders.

Thanks again for the information and I am sure I will have more questions.

There is also a UK Markey Cancer Center in Lexington, KY;

As I am in Canada, I am not overly familiar with how US social security works; is your wife entitled to it now that she is in hospital with a substantial illness with complications?

Hi Jeff,
So sorry to hear of your wife's condition. I will be praying for her health. Many others have been in the same place as your wife and have done quite well once treatments were started.

As Multibilly mentioned, the oncologist can run the necessary blood, urine, and bone marrow tests to see if it is Multiple Myeloma (and what type). Insurance usually allows a second opinion with a Multiple Myeloma specialist. The local oncologist can then follow the protocol of the specialist. There are so many new drugs and options then there were many years ago.

The power of prayer is definitely a positive as well as having a good support system. This board has been a great support both emotionally and intellectually. Please keep us updated.

HI Jeff, sorry to hear about all the problems that your wife is having medically right now. It is good for her to have you as such a concerned husband and caregiver, though. When you said that she would not eat, this would be a worry. I think that if she has kidney issues then probably you should ask the medical people about what she should be eating, and try for that. Also, she would probably want to stay hydrated also. I hope that you can get all of the help you need medically too.

Jeff, As far as medical costs go, be aware that there are organizations that may be able to help you out in a big way. They are dedicated to giving financial assistance to cancer patients in financial need. Talk to your oncologist about your situation for more information regarding this issue.

We are now at the cancer center. Dr. Nagarajan is having the radiation oncologist start an aggressive regimen radiation today to strengthen my Wife's bones as there is a concern of her spine being to unstable.

Dr. Nagarajan is going to get bone marrow Friday and determine the type of multiple myeloma.

That is all we know at this point.

Thanks, Jeff

Little Monkey,

Yes, multiple locations throughout the spine, right shoulder, and humerus, ribs, pelvis, and right femur.

Just spoke with the oncologist. He is doing the bone marrow in the morning at 07:00.

He even said that a transplant might be the best option and is consulting with someone from WVU in Morgantown.

So, he is talking about chemo and maybe sending us to Morgantown.
