This week’s poll is about how effective your first stem cell transplant was. How long did your myeloma remain in remission? How long was it before your myeloma relapsed / progressed?
A few clarifications:
First, count from the day you had your first stem cell transplant until your myeloma relapsed, such as when your M-spike began to rise.
Second, if you are a caregiver or family member of a myeloma patient who has had a stem cell transplant, feel free to answer on their behalf.
As always, feel free to post comment, thoughts, or feedback in the space below. For example, what treatments did you receive prior to your stem cell transplant? Did you receive consolidation or maintenance therapy after your stem cell transplant? If you are still in remission after your first transplant, how long has it been? If you have had multiple stem cell transplants, how long did each of your remissions last?

Re: Weekly Poll - Relapse After Stem Cell Transplant - 2013
Is there data that shows relapse averages for patients who do not follow ASCT with mainteanance therapy? I assumed this is a combination of maintenance and no maintenance? Any input would be appreciated.

Hi indymike,
You're right that this poll is open to both those who have and have not used maintenance therapy after stem cell transplantation.
We have not yet run the polls that you suggested that would differentiate between relapse rates for those who have and haven't used maintenance therapy, but it's a good question and we may run those polls in the near future.

My husband was dx Aug 2007 at age 40. Had 1st SCT March 08 and 2nd Aug 08. No maintenance at all. Mspike started to appear Sept 2012 at .11 and is now .40. No chemo yet, all other #'s are in range. He goes back to doc Jan 10.

My husband's m-spike starting rising about 15 months after his ASCT. He's now 2 years post transplant, and his m-spike is 1.1. He saw his transplant doc at Mayo 2 months ago. Though he lab-wise has relapsed, his doctor doesn't consider him relapsed because his other labs are perfect, and he has no new bone lesions. I would feel more comfortable if they also had a PET scan and a bone marrow bx. to back this up, but figure they know way more than me!

Hi Beacon Staff,
I was wondering what do you define as responding to treatment? After my auto my paraprotein decreased by 16% and then it started going up again. Libby

Hi Libby,
Thanks for pointing out that we didn't really have an option for people who achieved stable disease (a reduction in blood M-spike of less than 50 percent).
We made a few small changes to the options above such that people who responded or achieved stable disease after stem cell transplantation can vote for how much time passed before they relapsed.

Re: Weekly Poll - Relapse After Stem Cell Transplant - 2013
My m-spike reappeared within a year of my SCT, and crept up slowly over the course of the years, never reaching its original diagnosis level. My oncologist didn't declare me "relapsed" or put me on treatment drugs until I was nearly 8 years out. Prior to that was "watch and wait" and a few months of Revlimid at year 6, which drove down numbers, but was abandoned due to side effects. Velcade, combined with Dex and Cytoxin, is slowly driving the numbers back to where they belong. I was happy to live with a low level of stable disease and no drugs. I consider that to mean the SCT worked.
