Thomas Singer

by rumnting on Sat Oct 29, 2016 4:55 pm

My husband, Thomas Singer, M.D., passed away yesterday, after being diagnoses 5.5 years ago. His auto stem cell transplant was 5 years ago. He had the 17p deletion, and I think had been through every myeloma treatment out there. It was planned for him to go on a CAR T-cell trial at Mayo in December, but he needed his disease "beat back" before then. He underwent a cycle of D-PACE, and on the 10th day after the treatment started he developed a fever and had positive blood cultures. His infection did not respond to antibiotics, and he died of septic shock on the 17th day. I cannot say enough positive things over the treatment he received at Mayo over the last 5 years, and the help and support that I received from The Myeloma Beacon.

Thank you all for your kind words.

I want to add something to those who might be reading this, and are recently diagnosed. Though I said Tom had been through about all the myeloma treatments out there, what I need to add is that during that 5.5 years, he

  • Bought a motorcycle and rode it in Michigan, Arizona, and California
  • Went to Jamaica
  • Went to Italy
  • Went to Spain
  • Went hunting
  • Went to the gym several times a week
  • Worked part time
And most importantly, did those things with family and friends and enjoyed the time he had. Most of the time he felt pretty good. Some times he didn't, but the good far outweighed the bad.

Dear rumnting,

My deepest condolences to you and your family. It sounds like Thomas did not let his illness keep him from gaining some significant enjoyment out of life, given his activities.

May G-d grant him eternal peace, and may your memories live forever.
