Re: Subcutaneous Velcade injections - rash, redness & welts

Thank you so much Dan (in Phoenix).

I have been posting my experience during the first few weeks (today is the 20th day) of chemo in another thread. Multibilly referred me to your post about the air bubble technique, right after I had written about the 'burning' / 'sunburn' like patch of rash I got around my first Velcade shot. In case you had not seen my posts about my gratitude to you, I want to take this opportunity to mention it in this thread.

Surprisingly, the nurse who gave me my second shot was familiar with this technique from her experience at another chemo clinic, and she even showed me how easy it is to just pull a little air into the syringe while the needle is facing up and then just turn the syringe around (with the needle down) and the air would rise to the top of the Velcade.

I had to ask for the air bubble for my third shot, too. This time, the nurse did not know anything about it, but was open minded enough to check with the prior week's nurse. Now the new nurse, too, is convinced and understands that, with this technique, the Velcade does not irritate the outer skin and all of it gets pushed at the lower skin level when the air pushes the last drops down.

Needless to say, thanks to the air bubble technique, I have had only some discoloration of the skin near the needle mark since then, and no burning or itching.

Thanks again, Dan, and thanks to you, Multibilly, for directing me to Dan's post.
