Skin cancer with multiple myeloma
How common is skin cancer along with multiple myeloma? Does it typically happen before or after diagnosis?
Re: Skin cancer with multiple myeloma
I was diagnosed with a squamous skin cell tumor on my head 14 months ago and had Mohs surgery for it a year ago. Fortunately, it was at a very early stage, so I only needed one scraping of the tumor to get it all.
Who knows what caused it? But, I have a fair complexion and often have gotten sunburned in that location over the years, and all over. I am more consistent about wearing a hat now than ever before, even though I hate to wear hats. I have been very religious about using sun screen for many, many years, but who ever thinks of that for their head?

Re: Skin cancer with multiple myeloma
Hi hopeful27,
I had squamous cell skin cancer on my upper left arm. Like Nancy's case, it was removed by Mohs surgery.
Ironically, that happened at just about the same time that I was diagnosed with MGUS. I'm almost certain that was just a coincidence.
What kind of skin cancer do you have? I hope you can have it taken care of as simply as I did!

My husband does not have skin cancer, but recently had a very suspicious mole removed. Oncologist was very concerned that it was cancer, biopsy says no.

Pat Killingsworth, who writes a column for the Beacon, has skin cancer. He is now taking some form of chemo cream to treat the spot. He did have more serious skin cancer (melanoma) removed a couple of years ago.

Re: Skin cancer with multiple myeloma
You're right, Ron. I've had everything but the most common, basal cell carcinoma. Unprompted, the head nurse in Moffitt Cancer Center's dermatology department blamed my ongoing therapy for my melanoma. I believe it is far more common than reported in statistics. Think about it, who's really keeping track? Medical oncology office reporting it where? Once someone moves, changes doctors ... Compromised immune system open invite to secondary cancers.

Re: Skin cancer with multiple myeloma
Fair skinned and freckled, my first basal cell skin cancer was on my face in 1991. Since then and until diagnosed with multiple myeloma in May 2012, I never had anything other than precancerous spots, which my dermatologist froze off. Yesterday I had my 11th, 12th, and 13th spots surgically removed. I have to believe these are secondary cancers related to 4 years of Revlimid. I'm also on dex and Biaxin (clarithromycin). Has anyone heard of any studies on this subject?
Re: Skin cancer with multiple myeloma
My dad had basal cell skin cancer about 6-7 months before the solitary bone plasmacytoma / myeloma symptoms started to appear.

Working off of memory here, so someone can correct me if I am wrong, but I believe that melanoma is one of the secondary cancers for which Revlimid users are at risk.
