Re: My SCT went well, but I am not feeling good - advice?

by Elfriede on Sat Nov 08, 2014 12:53 am

Dear Cathy:

It is a hard time. In about 10 days it will start with chemo (about 4 month) and head radiation (5 weeks - every week from Monday to Friday).

At least the first two weeks I have to stay into the hospital.

Kindest Regards,

Elfriede

Whew, Elfriede,

That does sound like a hard time. Two weeks in the hospital right now must sound so discouraging. You want to start healing but chemo and radiation are a time you just put one foot in front of the other and try not to look at how far you have to go.

This is a time to just survive the treatment.

Maybe you can listen to music and look outside and see the birds? I did pray for you with my church group last Weds night. We prayed for healing and peace for you.

Please let me know how you are doing.

Dear Antelope:

Thank you so much for your kind words and for your praying.

I am home since 10 days after 2 weeks in the hospital. Radiation continues till December 19. Chemo continues for several months. I am feeling good now, but this head cancer is very difficult and hard.

But my doctor told me that my myeloma is very good now after SCT and all.

All the best to you, dear Antelope,

Hi Elfriede

You are home! I am so glad.

The year I had my stem cell transplant I got out of the hospital right before Christmas so we could not have a tree or gifts. My daughter and son-in-law and grandchildren came to town but they got the flu so I could only see them through a window. My 4 year-old grandson asked to see my bald head so I took off my scarf to show him. He said it looked nice and smooth :-) How funny. The one who is 3 years old still asks if I am wearing my wig.

Since I could not have much Christmas that year, I bought 4 small artificial trees last year and put one in each of my big windows.

You will probably keep this year simple - a Christmas of healing for you.

Is your head cancer "hard" because it is so depressing? Or is having all these treatments right after having a transplant that is hardest?

You will look forward to spring because you will know that new life is flowing in the world with new plants - and you should be finished with your chemo and radiation so you will feel new life in you too.

Much love to you in Germany.

Dear Cathy:

Thank you so much for your wonderful reply.

Christmas is a hard time for us this year. It was good to read what you have done at a hard time for you and your family.

My husband and I have booked a very nice hotel at the Baltic See for Christmas. It is a christial hotel with a good Christmas programme.

We have booked it already in the summer time. At that time we didn´t know about my "new cancer".

Dear Cathy, I wish you and your family a wonderful Christmas time.

Kindest regards and much love to you,

Elfriede

Dear Elfriede.

Thank you for your kind Christmas Wishes.

What fun for you and your husband to stay in a hotel on the Baltic Sea with a good Christmas program! That sounds perfect.

My daughter and son-in-law with 4 children will be in town this Sunday afternoon, but it is their turn to stay with my son-in-law's parents rather than us. But I hope to have each one of the grandchildren (except the 1 year old) stay with us for one of the nights. That will be fun to focus on just one grandchild at a time.

My sister is coming to town on Monday, too. She has a lot of energy and likes to join in anything fun.

We will have to share favorite stories of the Christmas holiday when you get back.

Love to you in Germany,

Cathy

Dear Cathy:

Lots of weeks are gone since Christmas. Hope, you have had a wonderful time with your family.

How are you doing, dear Cathy?

I have had a hard but good time with my brain tumor. I have had in January / February 4 weeks in a special clinic near our town here. My husband was with me. That was good. Lots of things to help me were done there.

My myeloma is very good, Cathy.

Couple of days we are home again.

Now I am planing my 60th birthday (it is on March 10th).

All the best to you!

Dear Elfriede,

I have thought of you many times and wondered how you are doing. I am so glad you will be going home in time for your birthday! (You might be there by the time I read this) Now you will finally be able to let your body heal. I think the best time of year to heal is springtime - there is new growth and new life everywhere.

Your husband sounds like a wonderful man.

My daughter and 4 of my grandchildren came up to stay on January 17th and it was fun to see them. I am amazed my daughter has so much energy. I can hardly move by 8:30 p.m. But it was fun. We went swimming at a pool with big long slides and my 3 year old granddaughter wanted me to go with her. I thought I could hold her up so she wouldn't go in the water, but we got going too fast. She and I went to the bottom of the pool and came up sputtering. She didn't go with me again.

Unfortunately, I got sick after they left. First, I got a runny nose, then it went into my eyes and I had pink eye, then it turned into a cough and finally Monday, February 9th, I went into doctor. They did Xray to make sure I didn't have pneumonia. I didn't. But I stayed home Tuesday and Wednesday and slept most of the day. I feel better today. Thank you for asking.

Love to you and your husband in Germany, Cathy

Dear Cathy:

I am so glad to read very soon from you. Thank you so much, dear Cathy.

You have had really fun with your nice grandchildren.

But the cold. Hope, you are feeling better today after getting your cold.

My husband and I have a terrible cold as well. I was X-rayed like you. For today, we had planned a trip to my brother in the Nuremberg area (southern area of Germany). But, because of the cold, we cannot go.

But we will have springtime hopefully soon.

Dear Cathy, I wish you and your family a very nice weekend. And get better soon!

Best Regards,

Elfriede

Hi Elfriede

I hope your cold is not where you cough all the time? I can't imagine how you could cough after being in the hospital so long. I had host vs graft disease and spent a week in Critical Care Unit. It is amazing how weak you get when you lie down for most of a week!

Do you feel better or do you still feel sore?

I wonder where you live in Germany? I know it is the northern part - is it near the sea?

I live in Wyoming - cowboy country :-). We have the Tetons, Yellowstone Park, and Devils Tower. I like Wyoming, it has a lot of natural beauty - lakes, mountains, and animals like antelope. We have a cabin on the mountain and my husband and I go fishing on the lakes in the summer.

Love, Cathy
