Kytril (granisetron) alternatives for serious nausea?

by Canuck Bob on Wed Dec 27, 2017 3:07 pm

I am experiencing fairly severe side effects from Kytril (granisetron), which I take to control my nausea.

Are there alternative anti-nausea drugs that people might recommend for nausea?

Have you tried ondansetron (Zofran)? This also comes in a tablet that dissolves on the tongue. Also, Ativan (lorazepam) can relieve nausea.

Sorry to hear about the nausea you've been experiencing, Bob.

There are a lot of options for controlling nausea. I get the sense that you have to experiment a bit with the different options to find the solution that works for you personally.

In addition to the ondansetron and lorazepam that brandywine mentioned, another option that is often tried is prochlorperazine (Compazine). I've also heard that the antihistamine cyproheptadine (Periactin) can work in some cases of nausea.

For mild cases of nausea, I personally have found ginger to be helpful. I usually take it in crystalline form.

There are a lot of discussions here in the forum about solutions for nausea. Here are is one with a number of posts:

You may be able to find additional recommendations by going through the posts in this longer list of many of the nausea-related forum discussions.

The anti-nausea pills I have are Zyprexa (olanzapine) and domperidone (Motilium). The biggest side effect is fatigue from the Zyprexa. And I found if you wait too long to take it, it does not work. Domperidone has minimal side effects for me, but you have to take it 3 times a day.

I had a negative reaction to both metoclopramide (Reglan, Maxeran) and prochlorperazine (Compazine, Stemetil) and had a seizure like fit, so they were careful figuring out what to give me!

I am in Ontario.
