What nausea medications work?

What nausea medications work?

Compazine (prochlorperazine) does not work for my daughter, but Zofran (ondansetron) has been her best friend until now. She just went through back-to-back DCEP treatments. Zofran worked through the first one, but she is so nauseous from the second round.

Any recommendations?

In a comment on his most recent column, Pat Killingsworth named some specific drugs that have helped him through tough times with treatment-induced nausea. He wrote:

Yes, besides standards Zofran and Compazine (Ativan worked best for me in my first transplant), granisetron helped. But a little used drug (used to help bipolar patients, so use is off label), olanzapine, worked like a miracle. It even helped chasing nausea; after it had already started. Just a little pill dissolved under the tongue.

Compazine didn't really work for me, either. Ativan was very effective, though.

Hi Terryj.

i Hope your daughter is doing better today. Some things that helped me were:

1. Small amounts of food
2. Yogurt or a smoothie
3. Ginger tea
4. Ginger ale (especially if it has real ginger in it)
5. A little coriander in water is good for digestive system
6. if I have heartburn, I put about 1 tbsp apple cider in about 1/2 cup water and drink it slowly.

I will warn you that I had a stomach ache long enough after ASCT that my doctor ordered an endoscopy. That doctor put me on omeprazole (Prilosec) – forever. After taking it for a year and still having stomach aches, I slowly weaned myself off omeprazole and, if I have a stomach ache or heartburn, I drink the small amount of vinegar in water, or have a little coriander in water or I have some sauerkraut. I know she might not be at a place to eat that, though.

Sending this with a prayer for your daughter and you.

I won't repeat the oral medications mentioned earlier; mostly they work fine. However, I haven't seen anyone mention IV anti-nausea medications. Have you tried an IV med prior to the chemo infusion? I did that with Kyprolis and it worked wonders in keeping the nausea from developing. If I need more at home, then Compazine works for me.

Ondansetron 8 mg (known as: Zofran) has been working well for me.

For what it's worth, I'm starting 5th cycle of Revlimid, Velcade, and dex (RVD) (2 weeks on, 1 week off) of my induction. I did not experience any nausea until about 3rd cycle. Now I get it occasionally, but the prescription takes care of it.

Periactin (cyproheptadine) worked for my husband when none of the above worked.

Good luck and hang in there. My husband has been back to work for 4 years and on no meds and only side effect is peripheral neuropathy, which no longer annoys him. It took him 6 weeks to get any energy after stem cell transplant, then one morning he woke up his old self and has never gone back. I wish someone had let me know that it us possible to get back to normal life when we were going through everything.

One day at a time – it will be worth it .

Wondering if anyone has personal experience with cannabidiol products. Multiple people have recommended this to me for post transplant chemo nausea and lack of appetite. I bought some, but have not tried it yet. (Transplant pending in October).

Ginger is good. Zofran causes constipation, which I want to avoid.

Hi All,

For mild nausea I also use crystalized ginger. It's readily available at many stores and online and works great for me. Today I dropped a little fresh ginger root in my smoothie which gave it a nice spice!

Best to all! BN

I never thought of ginger in my smoothie - great idea.

I usually have ginger as tea - you can buy a ginger root and slice it in thin slices and steep that in hot water for a while.
