When my husband first got diagnosed with POEMS, his blood work was checked every 8 weeks. Now after treatment his blood gets checked every 12 weeks.

I see my local oncologist monthly, at the beginning of every cyclophosphamide (Cytoxan) cycle. We check labs every two weeks – again because of the cyclophosphamide.

I see my onc at Dana Farber every 6 months or when things come up.

My induction therapy was weekly and administered in the oncologist office infusion treatment center, so I saw my oncologist once a week. I liked this, as I always had questions. My maintenance will be administered bi-weekly, so I will see him every other week. I will see my multiple myeloma specialist every six months or sooner if needed.

Best wishes to you and your husband today. You had mentioned today is his first appointment. Hopefully it will bring some comfort ti both of you.

When I was first diagnosed, I saw him once a month. That lasted a little over a year, but as I went into a remissive state, he changed the protocol and moved the appointment back to once every quarter (3 months). I have been on that schedule for the past 4 years.

My dad has not started his cyclophosphamide, Velcade, and dexamethasone (CyBorD) treatment yet, but he has completed radiation. He sees his haematologist every two months, his neurosurgeon every three months for a checkup, with a smattering of family doctor and palliative care (pain) doctor in between.

When I was first diagnosed with smoldering myeloma, I saw my oncologist (myeloma specialist) once a month. I had lab work at the same time. That lasted for a year.

Then, because I was doing well, he changed it to every 3 months. But, in the first 3 months, I progressed to active myeloma and began treatment. I was back on the monthly schedule with labs and Zometa infusion on the same day until my transplant.

After the transplant, I saw him weekly for about 6 weeks, then biweekly for about 2 months, then weekly for a few months. I have now been seeing him every 6 weeks for about 5 years. Labs and Zometa infusion are done on the same day.

I see mine every other cycle (21 days on, 7 days off, Revlimid). He calls me between the cycles he doesn't see me.

Until I relapse, I think that's what the schedule will be.
