Re: How long does it take for a multiple myeloma diagnosis?

by Angel142 on Sun Sep 15, 2013 3:14 pm

Thanks for the reply, I will go back to my GP soon. It could take a while to get a referral as I am not the standard age for this, only 31. I hope it's nothing serious but I'll know where to come if it is.

HI Angel142, Probably your GP could order some of the specialized blood tests for you. Many GP's aren't really looking for myeloma, since it is rare and they may not have had any other patients with this diagnosis. Then if those tests indicated a referral, i am sure they would assist you on that.

Hi, I'm Justine in Australia. My symptoms were similar to yours & I'm 42years young with 2 babies under 2yrs & a 6 year old. I thought I was just a typically run down sole mother hence the bone pain & infections that wouldn't budge. Then septic pneumonia happened but still hospital staff were baffled at my antibiotic resistance & inability to heal well. Two weeks later my GP ordered a Boio Chemical Profile blood test as she wanted to look further....thank God she did.

* severely depleted zinc levels
*aneamic
*kidney function low
*raised calcium levels
*PARA PROTEIN levels indicated Myeloema

3 days later I had bone marrow biopsy to.confirm & show how bad....it's bad & started treatment within the month. But my heamalologist told me BEFORE biopsy I had mulltiple Myeloema, I didn't have to wait. I realise our medical systems are different in our countries, I have lived in yours. But anyway that has been my experience in the last 6 weeks. This forum is a great place to get information from people who are in the same scary place as we are, i hope your outcome will be something that gives you a chance at having a good quality life even though it may not be the life you envisioned. Blessings from far away xx

"I started this journey on July 27. I contacted the oncologist a week later and it's been only one visit with her and one test"

This is OUTRAGEOUS!!! Once a Dr. suspects you have multiple myeloma the diagnosis should be swift. In my case once multiple myeloma was suspected the diagnosis, confirmation via bone marrow biopsy , and chemotherapy treatment all happened in 6 days. Multiple Myeloma is very serious business and these people are treating you like you have a hangnail.

Angel the only symptom you have that I have had is in your Hemoglobin, and mine is still low after 3 years of treatments.
I don't think I would worry about what is wrong until the doctor gives you solid information. I think you'll do yourself more harm than good. I would however question the delay in a diagnoses. multiple myeloma can be diagnosed fairly quickly.

The time is here. I received the diagnosis of multiple myeloma. Don't know where I go from here yet. My doctor is waiting on more results from the biopsy and she needs to consult a specialist. I need to decide if I want a second opinion from a specialist which means traveling to the lower 48 as I live in Alaska.

No, you are not wrong to expect better service from your doctor. I had same problem with my husbands doctor. I got rid of him and found a cancer doctor that had treated multiple myeloma.

It will be left up to you to take control and question everything.

It can be frustrating! It can be difficult to get the proper diagnosis. The best advice I can give is to get to a center that treats myeloma on a regular basis. Optimally to see an oncologist that specializes in Myeloma. The earlier in your treatment the better!

I noticed that you mentioned going to a chiropractor at an earlier date. I just want to warn you that Myeloma can make your bones very frail so you should avoid any sort of adjustments until your evaluation and diagnosis is complete and you talk to your oncologist. You may receive bone hardening medication during your treatment if you do end up with a diagnosis of multiple myeloma.

Blessings!

Results from the bone marrow biopsy show 18% myeloma cells and the t (4:14) chromosome. :-( We will be discussing treatment options in a couple days. I will be looking to get a second opinion from a specialist in the lower 48 states. The doctor says she can recommend someone at the Mayo Clinic in Arizona.
