Re: Eye inflammation or stye from Cytoxan-Velcade-dex?

by ByYourSide on Sat Sep 26, 2015 6:29 pm

My husband had blepharitis for about 3 months while on CyBorD during induction therapy. It started in one eye, then was in both eyes; looked like he had a chalazion but after I researched, I found out here on the Beacon that it was probably the Velcade.

We went to our ophthalmologist and he prescribed warm compresses, OTC eye drops and to wash the eyes with baby shampoo a few times a day. Didn't help much but he felt a little relief.

When we went to see our myeloma specialist, she agreed it was a reaction to the Velcade and put him on erythromycin ointment to the eye area for a month. That did the trick, and when he stopped the CyBorD in prep for the ASCT, the eye issues cleared up.

My husband is on his 4th cycle of Revlimid, Velcade, and dexamethasone (RVD) and has had significant "styes" in both eyes (upper and lower). We found that a combination of coconut oil topically several times a day and a warm compress have been quite effective, as well as soothing.

At their worst, his eyes were nearly swollen shut. They are much better now, but not completely healed.

This started right about the end of his second cycle. He is also having really blurry vision right after treatment and for a day or so following and we are uncertain if that is related.

Funny how one's perspective changes on this myeloma journey. I felt like the hero today because I found single-use lubricating eye drops ;)

Dexamethasone can have many effects on the eyes. The most common one is cataracts. Sensitive eyes may become inflamed chronically or intermittently.

Revlimid also can cause eye-related side effects, although they are rare.

I have been going through this eye issue, which consists of swollen and red eyelids. Also, I have a very bad inflammation in my eyes and a stye-like look on the top and bottom. The oncologist says it is not from the Velcade, dexamethasone, and the Revlimid. And this is really affecting my vision. :(

Just a note for those who might not see an eye doctor for examination after reading these posts, and just doing some self-treatment. Be aware that shingles can show up on the face and eyes without affecting the torso. It is very painful and can threaten eyesight once it sets in, so you will probably seek help eventually if it happens, but starting anti-viral pills as soon as possible can reduce the effects and duration.
