Re: Eye inflammation or stye from Cytoxan-Velcade-dex?

by dranton on Fri Feb 06, 2015 1:01 am

I am sorry to hear that others are struggling with this. Just when I think I've got all the side effects encountered, something else happens. I had a blocked gland also that became a chalazion.

When I saw the eye doctor, he prescribed warm compresses and an eye ointment. However, my eyelid was red, puffy, and swollen enough that he was concerned that, due to neutropenia, I might have an infection starting, So he also put me on antibiotics. He said we need to take this seriously because, if it does become infected, it can actually spread under or behind the eye and become very difficult to treat.

After a month, it is mostly better, although I still use a compress multiple times a week, especially in the morning. I think we have to be vigilant in our own care.

I'm so happy to run across this subject.

I, too, have experienced swollen eyelids as well as blurred vision. (I just finished my first round of Revlimid, Velcade, and dex). I spoke with my oncologist, who did not feel my symptoms were related to my treatment. I had read that Velcade could cause vision disturbances, so I was pretty sure the blurred vision was related.

I saw my ophthalmologist regarding my swollen eye lids because I was concerned about possible infection. He said my eye structure looked good, but put me on neo-poly-dex (neomycin / polymyxin B sulfate / dexamethasone) eye drops for 10 days. The drops have helped, but my eyes are very dry as a result. I will try using fish oil to help with the blurred vision. I was beginning to think I should get a new prescription for my glasses.

It's been absolutely wonderful to have this resource at our fingertips. Thanks to everyone for sharing your experiences.

Best regards to all, Lu

Wanted to chime in on this thread. This is a Velcade-induced side effect. Management is supportive and, when needed, with dose/schedule modifications. It stops when Velcade stops.

For some reason, this never seems to get reported in any formal way as a known side effect, but most of us who see a lot of myeloma have seen this clearly related to Velcade use.

I can attest to that. I started having these issues, along with the dryness, about a month into induction. Once I was off of the Velcade, it all cleared up.

I would also like to add my husband's recent experience. He developed bilateral styes while on the RVD regimen. The appearance of the styes followed an appointment with his ophthalmologist who gave him some retina test that involved putting two strips immediately below his eyes, that were attached to his skin with some type of adhesive. Within 72 hours of that test, the styes appeared.

That was a month ago, and I guess the problem with correlational data is that you can wrongly infer causality. I assumed he was vulnerable to infection and that there was something wrong with the equipment or he was exposed to some bacteria in the doctor's office. I didn't realize that this could be a clogged tear duct and become a potentially recurring and chronic problem related to the Velcade.

In reading this thread, I saw that one person used a "gel mask" to apply heat.

What methods other than warm moist compresses (clean washcloths) have you found to be most effective?

thank you.

After eight weekly Velcade subQ shots (along with Cytoxan and dexamethasone as a part of CyBorD induction therapy), a stye appeared on my lower eyelid. In spite of an ointment, they have come back. Second eye developed one, too. It has become a chalazion on the upper eyelid.

Ophthalmologist suggested to use warm eye compresses. It has not helped much (I had 12 weekly Velcade shots, so far). It seems this side effect has to be just tolerated to get the bigger problem of multiple myeloma under control.

I will appreciate any suggestions or remedies.

:) I am in the same situation. Second week with two styes. I had antiobiotic prescribed and it helped a lot, but it is still there. I was told it was caused by Velcade. Also, I believe that, because our immune system is so low, if we go to a place where there are smokers and lots of people, it can cause the eye infections. Another activity I engage in was pulling out weeds and sweating and cleaning my face with my hands. So, in my case, the styes could've been caused by either situation.

My father started treatment for multiple myeloma on July 16th. He is halfway through his second round of treatment - began as RVD but developed a rash from the Revlimid and was switched to Cytoxan this past week. He woke with a stye in his left eye this past Tuesday. Despite ointment and warm compresses it has not really gotten any better, but has not gotten worse. Today he has developed inflammation and redness under his RIGHT eye. Not sure if this is another stye developing.

I cannot tell you how much I appreciate this forum. It has already been a tremendous help in trying to figure out what a side effects. Thank you all so much for sharing your experiences.

Hi, I am on Revlimid 10 mg maintenance. I am not taking Velcade or Dex. There has been dryness of my skin and occasionally itchy bumps resembling bites. These usually go away fairly quickly except when one popped up on my left eyelid. Ouch! Warm compresses and better eyelid hygiene did not help much. The bump lasted a month and there is still slight redness there. This was not the normal stye. I'm attributing this to the Revlimid. So I think any of these agents has the potential to cause these symptoms.

Best! BN

I posted earlier about using a warm gel mask. It works well, but I have a new trick that works better! Coconut oil! I use it at night on my face as a moisturizer but spend extra time massaging my eyes. It makes it very easy and doesn't irritate your eyes. I also massage lids first thing in the morning before I get out of bed. I think it keeps the tear ducts from becoming blocked.

Just thought I'd share!
