Re: Anyone else sweating excessively?

by JohnT on Sat Oct 10, 2015 12:56 am

I am 74 year old male who for the past year suffered from fatigue until the roof fell in on me. I was rushed to a local hospital with about two-thirds of my blood gone. The doctors determined that not only did I have multiple myeloma but found an advanced infection in my blood.

First things first was a transfusion and then dealing with the infection. My children were notified to fly in and eventually the doctors were able to quell the infection and put me on 8 chemo's and I was then taken to Florida to complete another 15 treatments.

I then went back home to finish 4 more treatments, although I noticed in Florida I was sopping wet several nights a week. When I went home I noticed only several nights of a wet bed, but it has been four weeks since my last chemo and felt I needed a small water craft in my bed because it was a lot of water and hurt my quality of sleep.

From all this I truly feel that the chemo had a lasting effect on my night sweats.

My sister in law sweat something terrible on Revlimid, but she was also 50 and starting menopause. The drug really helped her get through menopause much faster! She was mean that year. It was unpleasant for everyone. She did not have those issues with Velcade or any other drugs.

I am new to multiple myeloma. Diagnosed confirmed November 2015. I am 56 years old (f) and am well post menapose (surgical 2004). While waiting to begin treatment and I am on oxy for 10/10 back pain due to fractures and compressed discs. sweats and hot flashes are something I've dealt with in the past but this past month it is different.

Night sweats are one thing but the spontaneous eruption of heat and drenching is unbelievable. Every inch of my body too, not localized to any one body area... But the entire body at the same time.

After reading posts about multiple myeloma and sweating I have thoughts. Active cancer - which is what multiple myeloma is for me now and even when the numbers are low...it's still somewhat active hence why we are placed on a lifetime protocol. Illness will create an oven effect. I've determined the sweating is the body trying to cook off the cancer in the best way it knows...heat.

While this is yet another annoying side note of this disease it is my path and my myeloma. I won't stop meds in the hope to stop sweats. I will embrace my sweat and find humor in my bodies attempt to offer its own protocol to help me heal. Do I smell? Ask...so far the reply is still no...to others but not to me...I think do. So to counter my brain I do a few things that have proven to help:

1. A/D ointment for urine odor after I shower
2. Essential Oils to help with sweat rash and to keep me balanced and calm. Essential oils are my go to everything so if I post often here...you will share in my obsession with oils
3. Carry wipes to freshen up
4. Embrace the body and its attempt to 'help'
5. Dress in layers

My sister-in-law got myeloma and amyloidosis at age 50. They put her on Revlimid and dex right away. She would literally drip with sweat and soak her hair. I am not sure which thing caused the sweating, but I know that on dex day, she was worse than ever. Not much a person can do about it, either. There are drugs such as gabapentin and clonidine that can help with hot flashes. Clonidine is a blood pressure drug which helps anxiety and hot flashes. I am on it because I had to get off hydrocodone a few years ago and it helped remove the awful anxiety from the withdrawal. IT was a godsend. I like it, so I stayed on it! Also helps nerve pain a little bit.

I sweat a lot with any movement I do. Including eating my breakfast, lunch, or dinner. I sweat easily during my brisk walk. I sweat during my sleep.

I do not know if it is due to Revlimid or dex?

My sister in law tried Revlimid the first time and dex. Neither of us could figure out which drug caused her to sweat like that. Then the Revlimid caused her liver to go haywire, so they changed the drug to Velcade and dex. She stopped sweating! It was the Revlimid. She never again sweat like that with any other drug.

I am 3 1/2 years since my stem cell transplant, age 70. I take 10 mg. of Revlimid, 21 days on, 7 days off . Any outdoor activity has me soaking wet and my stamina is way down. 18 holes of golf (using a cart) is a real test of endurance – lots of water cold towels and Gatorade help me thru, but I finish soaked thru. Grass cutting is similar . Also causes severe muscle cramps in the legs, toes, and feet.

Sweating profusely has been a problem for me since starting treatment. I, too, am on Revlimid and dex. I can count on soaking through everything on my dex night and also easily with light exertion. When I was still working as a physical therapist, my patients would love my dex days because my hands were so hot. They called them my hot pack hands and loved having "hands on" treatment on those days.

One thing that might help is to get one of the sports scarves that has beads in it. You soak it in water and then wear it draped around your neck. As the water evaporates it cools your body. The body's core temperature receptors are in your neck so this helps to cool your entire body down some. I also carry a handkerchief, a man sized one, in my purse at all times to use when I'm having one of those sweat attacks.

Good luck in finding some relief,
