Curcumin, what form, what brand, and dosage?

by dnalex on Sun Jul 14, 2013 1:40 am

Hello,

I'm just curious if you are taking curcumin supplements, and if so, in what form are you taking it (fresh, supplement pills, etc)? What brand curcumin are you using, and how much are you taking daily? After consulting with my mom's myeloma specialist, my mom started taking 1000 mg curcumin daily (Vitacost brand). I realize that it's well under the amount that some have taken and found to be effective, and she may work up to a higher dose, but for now, she is staying at 1g/day.

Thank you,
Alex

I have seen a lot of recommendations for Doctor's Best Curcumin C3 Complex with BioPerine. The dosing recommendation seems to be to start at 1mg a day and gradually work your way up to 8mg / day.

Above all, research the use of this product, discuss it with your mom's doctor (as you have), and then make an informed decision.

Good luck.

Hello,

Thank you for your reply. My mom is taking the curcumin (95% or greater curcuminoids) with bioperine. We did tell the doctor the dose and will evaluate at some later time whether to stay at that dose or not. :)

I get the 900 mg triple strength Curcumin from the Vitamin Store. I have no way to evaluate one brand vs another. :D

You have to use a BCM-95 version of Curcumin. Curcumin in its natural state is a large, poorly absorbed molecule. Most cur cumin supplements are just 95% standardized cur cumin which is essentially standard, poorly absorbed cur cumin. Some use bioperine to increase absorption though the increase is negligible. Curcumin is essentially the active component of turmeric. It is a curcuminoid. There are three curcuminoids and to increase absorption BCM-95 Curcumin utilizes all of the Curcumnoids along with the essential volatile oil extracts. There have been over 15 studies to confirm the fact that BCM-95 Curcumin is increases absorption 7 to 10 times over standard commercial cur curcumin. Google "bcm95" for more information.

The only BCM-95 supplement I am aware of is Curcu-Gel, BCM 95 in a soft gel form. Again, just Google "curcu-gel" and you'll find many retailers who sell it.

There is a lot of disinformation on supplement and vitamin absorption and a lot of people are purchasing inferior versions that are simply not being absorbed by the small intestines and thus not conferring any benefit. Not only is this a waste of money it is a detriment to health. I hope this helps and that it stimulates more conversation about quality supplements.

I am smoldering. I tried Doctor's Best C3 with Bioperine (8g/day) for a few months with no positive impact on my lab results during that time. I recently switched to Theracurmin (1.2g/day) and am waiting until I get a couple more labs behind me before I weigh in with the results of my overall experiment with supplements.

In the case of one person I know who has taken curcumin and various other supplements for smoldering myeloma, it took about a year for their globulins to improve and two years for their IgA trendline to turn.

The recent Australian study (see link below) utilized C3 from Ageless Cures. The associated clinical trial used C3 from Sabinsa.

It's really still the wild, wild west and a lot of guesswork when it comes to using supplements like curcumin to treat multiple myeloma.

Everyone is different. While some folks may have luck with a given supplement, for others they may not work at all.

I take a mixture of two sources - both of which have been modified to improve absorption

BCM-95. This is sold by Life Extension, and is available at the Vitamin Shoppe, where I buy it. This company has a great reputation and apparently spend a lot of money on research. You will notice that the capsules have a distinct peppery smell - which to me is a good sign of potency and newness. This is in contrast to the Vitamin Shoppe brand - which I would not recommend buying - which come across as stale, as if if has been sitting on a shelf for years.

Doctor's Best - Curcumin Phytosome featuring Meriva 500 - a membrane-based complex that also enhances absorption.

I take 1000 mg every day since about 2011. So far it has slowed it down. I had mgus now it is smoldering, i take other supplements too, calcium, multivitamin, b 12, so the verdict is out on effectiveness.

Hi - I was diagnosed in the fall of 2011 with MGUS. At the time my spike was 1.5, WBC was almost 4, and a bone marrow biopsy showed I was Ig MGUS with a trisomic. My spike and WBC stayed the same thru early 2013. In Feb 2013, an MD friend recommended for my 'monoclonal disorder' to take green tea extract (315mg) twice/day. Also, for at least a year, I've taken Vitamin Shoppe Curcumin 900mg daily. This week had my annual visit with oncologist and learned my m spike is now .9 and WBC is 6.5. I asked if she thought the green tea reduced the spike and she said with Ig MGUS the levels can vary/test. I'm going to continue with green tea extract I buy at the grocery store. Diane

Hi. I was diagnosed with very high risk multiple myeloma in October of last year. I was on Velcade, Revlimide and Dex. I was also on Curamed (Europharma) 750mg three times a day along with Resveratrol, Life Extension Fish oil, vitamin D3, Pectaol C . I also ate a very healthy vegetarian diet with lots of organic fruits and vegetables (no dairy and no sugar). I personally have done very well on this program. I am stage 2 but I have no bone issues and no neuropathy, I believe that starting this program so early in my diagnosis has made a difference. I have tried other curcumins but I personally saw the best results (in my blood work) with the Curamed.
I just had an allo transplant at the end of June and I am feeling great. I won't know if I am in remission for a few months but I am hoping for the best.
I have found that the curcumin and resveratrol also kept my inflammatory levels low. I had no kidney issues with the resveratrol and my kidney values are normal.
It is also important to watch your stress levels as stress can weaken your immune system.
