Multiple Myeloma, chemotherapy and curcumin
Dosage: at least 4 g daily of pure curcuminoids on an empty stomach with any or all of the following:
a spoon of olive oil
black pepper
papaya
pineapple
yogurt
All these help absorb curcumin better.
Alschuler, Lise, and Karolyn A Gazella. The Definitive Guide to Cancer an Integrative Approach to Prevention, Treatment, and Healing. New York: Celestial Arts, 2010.:
"Another form of cancer, multiple myeloma, may be deterred with curcumin. A 2012 trial (Golombick et al.) studied thirty-six patients with two precancerous conditions that can progress to multiple myeloma. The trial found that both 4 gram and 8 gram daily doses of curcumin reduced progression to multiple myeloma, whereas a placebo had no effect."
Also, curcumin is very beneficial for aiding chemo; see the study "Multiple Myeloma, chemotherapy and curcumin": http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3373483/
Here's the Natural & Alternative Treatments page for turmeric (whose coloring is curcumin): http://healthlibrary.epnet.com/GetContent.aspx?token=e0498803-7f62-4563-8d47-5fe33da65dd4&chunkiid=21874
From this book by Dr. Murray, N.D. (naturopathic doctor): http://books.google.com/books?id=UmkOD1YIqXYC&pg=PA173 :
"The body does not absorb curcumin all that well. To enhance absorption we recommend taking curcumin along with proteolytic enzymes* (discussed above). This combination is best taken on an empty stomach 15 to 20 minutes before meals or between meals.
"Is curcumin safe?
"Curcumin has an excellent safety profile. In fact, no lethal dose has been reached in animal studies.²⁰ Curcumin at a dosage of 2.5 g/kg fet to mice, rats, guinea pigs, and monkeys produced no mortality or genetic mutations in offspring."
*= proteases. Proteolytic means they're able to break down proteins.
"Papaya and pineapple are two of the richest plant sources" of proteolytic enzymes (source: http://healthlibrary.epnet.com/GetContent.aspx?token=e0498803-7f62-4563-8d47-5fe33da65dd4&chunkiid=21671 ).

Re: Curcumin, what form, what brand, and dosage?
Hi,
As many of you have already found out, there are infact a lot of unsubstanciated claims by almost all herbal/natural supplements manufacturers! It's no wonder that the other side scorns & ridicules anything herbal or natural! I started using Dr's Best" curcumin last year, but then read a few reports which casted doubt on it's content & effectiveness, besides being ridiculously overprised! So I switched to "Vitacost"'s own brand. However, this is advertised as "Turmeric Extract" & not as Curcumin! What I am confused as to why would they advertise it as "Turmeric extract" if it was truly pure "curcumin"?
This is exactly what is printed on the bottle;
Supplement facts:
Serving size................................................2 capsules
This is exactly what is printed on the bottle;
Turmeric Extract (Curcuma longa).............1160Mg
(Standardized to 95% curcuminoids)
(Rhizme) Curcumin C3 complex
Curcuminoids..............................................1000Mg
Black pepper Extract...................................5Mg/cap
(Standardized to 95% piperine) (fruit) Bioperine
Other ingredients:Gelatin(capsule),rice flour,magnesium stearate(vegetable source)
However, This does seem to have a very positive effect on my general health. What I really want to know is, whether this is actually curcumin or just a market ploy by Vitacost to sell "kitchen turmeric"
as curcumin! Can someone, anyone please throw some light on this?

Re: Curcumin, what form, what brand, and dosage?
I have been reading with some interest the posts regarding this substance, and have decided to give it a try...starting at about 500mg daily, and gradually increasing the dosage.
What concerned me today, and led to a call to the hospital's anticoagulation clinic is the effect on my INR. I am taking 35 mg of coumadin weekly for DVT, which is now controlled, but still a concern.
The clinic recommended 500mg every other day and get my INR checked late next week. This was based on the "wait and see" model of intervention, as there are no guidelines that were known to the hospital.
My question, has anyone experienced a similar situation, and what were the recommendations/outcomes?

Re: Curcumin, what form, what brand, and dosage?
Hi GLC,
I am one of those that curcumin seems to work for, but as a blood thinner it did nothing. I've been taking 8gm a day for over a year and still had a DVT. I've been on prophylactic Lovenox now along with the curcumin dose. Using Drs Best with Bioperene.
Caution is a good thing. This was just my case.....best! BN

Re: Curcumin, what form, what brand, and dosage?
I take Life Extension Super Bio-curcumin, 400 mg, Vegetarian Capsules twice a day.
With "Subscribe and Save" option on Amazon, it costs $18.20 for a monthly dose of 60 capsules.
I used to take it with vitamin C to further aid in absorption, but have paused vitamin C while on Velcade.
Each 400 mg capsule of Super Bio-Curcumin is equivalent to 2772 mg of a typical 95% curcumin extract as it has up to 7 times greater absorption.
