Can kidneys improved drastically with treatment?

by hopeful27 on Mon Jun 30, 2014 9:12 am

Is it possible for kidneys failing to the point of dialysis (or almost to the point of dialysis) to have a 100% turnaround?

We are wondering if it's possible to predict if my mom's kidneys will ever be 100% normal again after creatinine over 3.0.

Thanks.

My kidneys were near the point of dialysis (GFR of 12) but after treatment with Velcade and dexamethasone, and a stem cell transplant, my GFR (test of kidney function) improved to 41. My kidney specialist said that I could function very well with this level of kidney function, and he was right. My GFR has held for 4 years now, with slight variation.

All the best to your mother!

In my case, I was on the verge of complete kidney failure but turned around 100%. It was not clear that was going to be the case, though. No promises were being made by my doctors. But, in my case, the treatment and recovery went really well.

My husbands creatinine level was 5.5 at diagnosis. His creatinine level was at 1.0 or below within 6 weeks of treatment (RVD - Revlimid, Velcade, and dexamethasone). Amazing!

Eight months later, his creatinine level rose again to 4.4 as a result of, we think, receiving intravenous vancomycin. Today, his creatinine level is back at 1.0 or below.

So, there's definitely reason for you to be optimistic. Best of luck to your mother!

I was on dialiysis for over 2 months.

Creatinine was almost 5. It's at 1.5 now. Stayed at 1.8 for over a year and just recently dropped. Was treated with Velcade & dex and continue Velcade sq every other week for maintenance. They actually say amyloidosis is primary now and multiple myeloma secondary. This weird disease affects everyone so differently. Was diagnosed in 2011 at age 55

My kidneys failed completely shortly after I was diagnosed in October of 2009. Creatinine reached 10. Began dialysis 2 weeks after starting Velcade. After 6 weeks, my creatinine had dropped back down to around 2 and I was able to go off of dialysis. My kidneys are still functioning and I'm in a really good remission. There's definitely hope for recovery!

I have lambda light chain myeloma and I presented with a creatinine level of 3.1. After Velcade and dex, it lowered to 2.0. After ASCT, it lowered to 1.7, and this is where it stays. I am on Revlimid maintenance. So, yes, treatment will definitely help with kidney function.

Yes. At diagnosis I had a creatinine of 6.3 and was put on dialysis. I quickly came down to 3 and remained at that figure for 5 months.

Toward the end of my Velcade, I ran into conflicts between the infusions and dialysis and started missing one dialysis a week with no change in my creatinine. I then had a week in which I missed two treatments, again my creatinine remained at 3.

In spite of warnings of various consequences, I quit dialysis. A month later my creatinine was at 2.3 and a month after that it was below 2.

I'm not a doctor obviously, but I've never gotten a reasonable answer to why or to what is the criteria for dialysis. I eventually questioned whether dialysis was even warranted at a creatinine of 3 and why it was continued without question. I think economics might have been the fuel.

Wayne:

About all I can think of,..... is that acutely, the dialysis helped clear your blood and your nephrils, and helped you avoid a tumor lysis syndrome---where all the detrius created by the highly toxic levels, plugs up the nephrils and veins, and really messes up your kidneys--permanently (ie. Hydrostatic backfill) .

It sounds as if you cut your dialysis off,...... just a bit before your MD's were comfortable doing so. ??? Perhaps you cut dialysis off a few days early--was the concern ? I dunno...

In any event, glad your kidneys cleared, and began running like a happy little pair of submarines !

Fluid Mgt is a fine art---May you pee like a racehorse !! ( Lasix treated, of course)

Good luck

My situation was similar to this with kappa light chain myeloma. Although my creatinine never hit 3, it was close. Coupled with the fact that I only have one kidney, my nephrologist was quite concerned about getting this under control as quickly as possible. My creatinine has been floating around 1.6 since my SCT which is better than normal for a man with one kidney.
