Re: Biking with multiple myeloma
Wow. More than 8000 miles on your bike the same year you had a stem cell transplant. Scary. And very impressive. Congratulations ... and good luck keeping that pace in 2015!

Re: Biking with multiple myeloma
Andrew,
That is an incredible accomplishment. My 4,130 miles pales in comparison. I lost a month with open heart surgery and had to cut back a little beforehand; however; I have never gone 6,000 miles in a year, let alone over 8,000!! Plus I live in Texas, where it is warmer and there is less rain. I used to live in Western Pennsylvania, so I know that you have limited time in the winter to ride outdoors. That makes your accomplishment even more impressive!!
Now we all have to work on 2015 biking goals!

Hey Andrew,
You can't count the 7500 miles on your motorcycle.

Thanks all for the encouragement.
Don, motorcycles scare me, so no cheating there.

That is really great, Andrew!
I do love to cycle too. I have no idea how many miles I have done, but maybe I'll keep track in 2015.
I love this thread and everyone on here!
Let's keep it up everybody!

Re: Biking with multiple myeloma
Andrew,
Like the others who responded, all I can say is: Wow - over 8000 miles! Where do you get the time for all that biking. On a good week, I get about 120-140 miles in, but with working late, weather, etc., I sometimes struggle to make 100. Figuring about 7-8 months of biking, a good year for me is 3500 miles and more likely to get 3000-3500.
Keep cranking.

Way to go, Andrew!
Here's wishing all of you on this thread a Happy and Healthy New Year. I hope 2015 sees all of us exceeding our own expectations about exercise, just as Andrew described with regard to his cycling mileage in 2014.
(Not to change the subject too much, but I'll share one of my exercise-related goals for 2015. I want to climb Half Dome in Yosemite with one of my nieces.)
Keep going!
Mike

Re: Biking with multiple myeloma
Congrats to you, Andrew, and all who are clocking in good results with exercising! It is certainly on my NYR list to try to exercise every day.
I like to walk, or go to the gym or the pool, sometimes cycling. It's a little snowy and cold here for that right now though, although the bike commuters are on the pathways year round.
Happy New Year's to all at the Beacon also. Best wishes for 2015!

Happy New Year!
I just completed the first 2 weeks of my induction chemo and I am a newcomer to this thread. I am not a biker but an avid golfer who prefers walking (even if the cart is free) a whole round. I found out last week that the chemo has affected my ability to 'speed walk' the 200 and 100+ yards after the golf shots. I hope that is only temporary.
I just wanted to share my experience/observation confirming the role of exercise for myeloma patients:
I was getting a very noticeable tingling in my fingers for the last few days and the recent golf and routine exercise, together, seem to have made that sensation disappear. The exercise also seems to calm the nerves and gives renewed vigor to keep going.
I start my third chemo week today with the dex in an hour and Velcade in the afternoon. Hope to enjoy the New Year's Eve and wish all of you the same and a Happy New Year!

Re: Biking with multiple myeloma
Hi K_Shash and happy new year! I hope your treatments are going well.
I just went through 6 cycles of Velcade/dex to knock back my lambda light chains, which had taken a leap upward. I found that there were days that I'd be out of breath walking up the stairs or going to get the newspaper, then felt fine the next day. I think being tired, in part from the Velcade and definitely when coming down from the dex high, can do that. So, just walk slower for a day or so.
Of more concern is the tingling, because that could be neuropathy. Are you still experiencing it?
