Amanduh,
Which treatment regimen (combination of medicines) are they planning to treat your mother with?

Re: Just got bad news - my mother has multiple myeloma
Just wanted to say hi and give my support. My mother was diagnosed with multiple myeloma in March 2016. It was a shock, as she has always been so healthy and is the wonderful rock of our family. My mom went through a stem cell transplant over the summer and it was very successful.
However, she did have a compression fracture prior to the transplant that was not caught by her doctor and is too advanced to do the cement procedure. She responded well to treatment and the transplant and is officially in complete remission. But, she continues to struggle with back pain related to her compression fracture. She is overall back to herself and says she feels great cancer free if it wasn't for that darn compression fracture.
I resonated with your post as I also am very close to my mother and have two young children. I feel that I am bursting with love, fear, confusion, and gratitude all at the same time.
It has been quite a last six months; I no longer cry as frequently, but definitely have a tender pit in my stomach and yearning to see her as much as I can.
Sending my love to you.
Amanda

HI!
My name is Marsha. My father was diagnosed in July and it has been so hard as he too is my best friend. I am a bit older, 40 but I have two little ones – 10 and 4 – who love their Gramps so much!

My mom had multiple compression fractures and had kyphoplasty surgery (cementing) back in July, which helped her out a lot, and then was diagnosed back in September with multiple myeloma. She might be getting her stem cell transplant around February. She's been reacting very well to her treatment so far. Fingers crossed!

Re: Just got bad news - my mother has multiple myeloma
My mother was also diagnosed with multiple myeloma back in February 2016, at the age of 57. She underwent her auto stem cell transplant in July 2016 after 3 rounds of induction therapy (Revlimid, Velcade, and dexamethasone).
At her 3 month follow up visit with her main oncologist and stem cell transplant team in Houston at MD Anderson, we found out she has relapsed. She was in complete remission after the transplant, so we weren't expecting this news at her appointment.
She has started back on Revlimid, Velcade, and dexamethasone, but her counts are still rising
We go back to Houston in 2 weeks and will hopefully find out more about our next steps.
I don't really have people to talk to about this, so if you ever need someone, just keep sharing your experiences. My mom is my best friend and handling this all like a champ, but I am lost at times and so terrified of our future.

DaniGuid1,
I am a mother of two girls and also was diagnosed at age 57 in 2012. I'm sorry your Mom's stem cell transplant didn't "knock back" her multiple myeloma. I also get treatment at MD Anderson (stem cell transplant in February 2013) and continue to go to Houston twice a year (I live in Florida).
Best wishes to your Mom. You are at a good place for treatment.

Re: Just got bad news - my mother has multiple myeloma
It sure has been a while and I sure hope you all are around! My mom had her stem cell transplant last Wednesday (they used her own cells; I forget the correct term for it).
Shortly afterwards she started getting mouth sores and diarrhea and was nauseous for a couple days. Diarrhea and nausea stopped and she hasn't been eating because of her sores. Hasn't been drinking because she can't swallow, so they've been pumping her with fluids. Her blood work levels have dropped. Dropped so low that she received a platelet transfusion today. I just feel like she's going on a downward spiral. She received an IV of Dilaudid (hydromorphone) to help with her sores because morphine wasn't working. She's still in the hospital. They were aiming to get her home this Monday coming up, but I don't think that's going to happen.
