Re: AC's stem cell transplant in South Florida

Hi Gala

I will be trying to post every day during the transplant and thereafter. Our journeys are so important for us and the others who walk with us on the journey.

Hope you enjoyed Boca. It's a wonderful place to live. My motivation is to recover so I can get back to the beach and eventually scuba dive again with my family and friends.

AC,

I too have read a lot about the ice use during high dose chemo. Also they said those flavored fruit pop cycles can be used with or in place of the ice. I plan on my hubby doing this as well.

We have completed all our pre-test but follow-up bone marrow biopsy and that is tomorrow. We have a sit down with all the transplant team today (RN, social worker, finance, nutrition, pharmacy) all but the doctor and that is scheduled for next week when we sign the consent forms and get all results from pre-test back. If all goes as planned my dear hubby's new birthday will be June 3.

Good luck and keep posting. I will post his journey under Dear Hubby's Transplant Saga. :D

I had my stem cell transplant on March 29 with high-dose melphalan the day prior. I was given ice during the process, but I still ended up with the sores in my throat.

Be very vigilant about the ice because the mucositis was horrible. I couldn't eat and could barely drink for a week. It hurt so bad to try to swallow anything. Luckily, that was the only real problem I had. I wouldn't wish it on anyone.

Well tomorrow is the big day. I am supposed to check in at 10 a.m. at the Sylvester Cancer Center's stem cell transplant wing at 10 a.m. and then off we go. Hope my stem cells are ready to get out of the deep freeze come Thursday on my new birthday!

Best of luck, AC and our Beacon friends who follow!

Janet had her high-dose chemotherapy on March 14 and the stem cell transplant on March 16. The ice trick worked for her; she chewed ice all during the infusion (30 minutes), followed by another 30 minutes after.

The exercise efforts really help. She was able to do 12 laps around the floor (1 mile) everyday except for one. She had some nausea and diarrhea, but they were able to control it.

She was released to home on March 29, a couple of days early.

Recovery at home was okay, but she had some nausea issues at home also. I gave her anything she wanted (if well cooked), lots of Pedialyte, and small meals. She did as much walking as possible. The 2nd week seamed to be the hardest, fatigue wise.

Her blood chemistry completely recovered by the end of the first week. :D

Interestingly, her M-spike didn't change from before the transplant and at her discharge, 0.2 g/dL.

Her bone marrow biopsy before the transplant showed nothing, flow cytometry MRD negative!

Latest tests last Thursday show all clear! And her strength is returning nicely.

BEST OF LUCK to you all!
