LOL, thanks, Mike! My Velcade "patches" faded quite a bit this week, although they are still there, even the ones from the July.

Re: Subcutaneous Velcade injections - rash, redness & welts
Hi Mike,
I was on subcutaneous Velcade shots for ~2 years. I started with my stomach but switched to alternate arms because these hurt less. I was getting them at the Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale, AZ.
Concerning the rash, it went away once the staff was trained to put a small (~100ul air bubble) into the syringe. When they inject the drug they also push a small amount of air into the tissue. It sounds worse then it was and didn't hurt or even feel it.
What the nurses said was that this reduced the "tracking" of Velcade back through the skin when the needle is withdrawn.
This may seem like a small thing to do but it completely got rid of any marks from the injections and reduced the lingering pain I sometimes felt at the site.
I suggest everyone who is getting subcutaneous Velcade ask the nurses to try this!
I hope this helps.
All my best,
Dan in Phoenix

Re: Subcutaneous Velcade injections - rash, redness & welts
I get a red welt around the injection site that is between the size of a quarter to a half-dollar. I get my shots in the belly and rotate side to side. It takes about 2 weeks for the mark to fade and my shots are once every two weeks, so this is working for me.

Dan, very interesting about the small air bubble in the syringe. I don't think my medical team did that when they gave me Velcade injections. Fortunately, I'm not on Velcade now, but will keep that in mind of Velcade is added to my treatment sometime in the future.

Thanks for sharing that idea, Dan. I might be going back on additional Velcade treatments and will definitely ask about the air bubble.

Re: Subcutaneous Velcade injections - rash, redness & welts
Dan,
I also thank you for sharing about the air bubble. My husband got a fairly large spot on his arm with this last injection. I will tell him to ask the nurses if they do this. I know the injection prior to this the nurse stated that she gives it slowly, as she was told this causes less reaction, and there was only very minor redness. I do not know how it was given this last time as I was not able to be with my husband.

Re: Subcutaneous Velcade injections - rash, redness & welts
I'm so glad the Beacon exists to answer these types of Questions to newly diagnosed patients. I received my first SubQ Velcade injection and within 24 hours had a large red "sunburn looking" rash occur at the injection site. Thank you for all the folks that take the time to post their information. Now I know this isn't just happening to me, but does occur to several multiple myeloma patients receiving Velcade injections.

Re: Subcutaneous Velcade injections - rash, redness & welts
I got terrific relief from Velcade subQ rash (and dex facial rash) from aloe. Take a leaf from your houseplant - or garden if you're so lucky - and squeeze the juice onto the area where it is irritated. Use as often as you like.

Just want to mention that I asked for the "bubble" at my last Velcade injection and I had NO rash or pain. Thank you, Dan!!!
