Zometa causing low calcium level?

by Restlessrebel on Fri Apr 29, 2016 11:41 pm

Hi Everyone,

Has any one else had low calcium levels after being treated with Zometa? Today was my 3rd infusion (every 4 weeks) and they almost did not administer because my calcium was at 8.3 mg. I already take 50,000 of vitamin D once a week.

I would love to hear your experience with this. Thank you and warm wishes.

Restlessrebel,

I can't speak from personal experience, but the fundamental role of a bisphosphonate is to reduce the bone resorption process, which will in turn often lower one's serum calcium level. In fact, bisphosphonates are often specifically prescribed to hypercalcemic patients to lower their calcium levels.

You may want to discuss calcium supplementation (not just vitamin D supplementation) with your onc, as well as to make sure that your parathyroid function (which plays a vital role in calcium level regulation) is up to snuff.

Thank you Multibilly. Good advice on the calcium supplement! My parathyroid was checked about 6 months ago and it was at normal levels, but then again so was my calcium at that time. Will get it checked again.

Have a wonderful weekend.

Hi Restless,

Our doctor informed us to be sure to take calcium, especially once my husband begins his monthly Zometa infusions. My understanding is calcium 1000 mg daily and vitamin D 1,200 orally daily. I did research and am looking into calcium that also comes with vitamin D3 and magnesium to help with absorption.
