Questions and discussion about smoldering myeloma (i.e., diagnosis, risk of progression, potential treatment, etc.)

Re: Zometa infusions

Wednesday I got my 9th dose of Zometa. Today I am having terrible muscle pain in my calves. I have not done any unusual physical activities. I have noticed this on other occasions after Zometa, but it's never been this bad before. I'm having trouble walking because of it.

I'm a tiny bit concerned about rhabdomyolysis. I know it is a rare, but known, side effect of Zometa.

Has anyone else ever had this problem, and how did you deal with it?

Tracy, I had this happen for the first time after my most recent Zometa treatment. I think I was a little dehydrated and it went away in a day. I'm at about the same treatment timeline as you so I'm hoping it's not some sought of intolerance building.

Good luck with future treatments.

Update: I talked to my oncology NP about the calf pain after Zometa, and she's going to switch me to pamidronate (Aredia). She also suggested I take magnesium supplements around the time of administration. And, of course, I need to stay well-hydrated.

We'll see if this reduces the pain and general malaise.
