Zometa after years of Fosamax before myeloma diagnosis?

by elles on Fri Jul 14, 2017 11:16 am

Hello,

We are trying to find any published research that discusses the risks associated with taking a bisphosphonate (Zometa) for multiple myeloma patients who previously have been treated with a oral bisphosphonate for osteoporosis for at least 5 years.

My Mother in law was on Fosamax (alendronate) orally for 5 years or more (approximately 2007-2012) to prevent osteoporosis based on her bone density testing. From September until December she had multiple kyphoplasty procedures. In December 2016 she was admitted to hospital with acute renal failure and finally diagnosed with multiple myeloma. She started on Velcade and dexamethasone and recently started Revlimid. Her oncologist has continued to recommend Zometa. We would like to thoroughly research this before adding any additional medications to her treatment plan.

Thank you.
