Re: Yunzhi mushroom / PSP

Hi Nancy!

I think this excerpt answers your question with greater specificity:

"PSP is different from ordinary chemotherapeutic drugs. Although its anti-cancer effect is not as that of potent as that of chemotherapeutic drugs, PSP does not cause harm to the normal cells. In other words, PSP possesses the ability of distinguishing between normal and cancer cells. Our famous oncologist Professor Liang-zhong Xu and toxicologist Professor Bao-zhen Zhong have discovered that PSP can cause chromatin aggregation in cancer cells of human lung cancer, stomach cancer, leukemia and lymphoma, but it dose not produce any toxic effect on lung fibroblast. Dr. Mei-po Yang of University of Hong Kong has also proved that PSP can cause the burst and coarseness of the membrane of human liver cancer cells (SMMU-7721) but it does not produce such morphological changes or toxic effects on normal liver cells. There are tens of thousands of clinical application of PSP. Many patients have taken Psp consecutively for 9 years and neither adverse effect nor contraindication has ever been observed, Physicians make laudable remarks on PSP and consider it the green medicine for the treatment of tumours."

Hi Suzierose..thanks for YOUR research. I always feel that the Beacon site is enriched by your delving into these scientific/medical sorts of topics. And you are obviously well qualified to do so!
I quickly looked at the URL connection you sent. I was pleased to see that the PSP is a lab culture derived from the wild mushroom. One doesn't like to think of nature being stripped of a plant because of it's use for humans. That has happened so often in the history of our planet's ecosystem that it is just sad!

But of course I still wouldn't know how such a drug fitted into the myeloma scheme of things unless it were tested out in the lab and in clinical trials. I am really cautious about supplements in general. I managed to get by without taking them, so that is just my bias . Don't you think it would be interesting if someone took up this compound and studied it (rhetorical question!).

Hi Nancy!

Thanks for your nice compliment...I just have a curious intellect..gotta find/learn the who, what, when, where and why....lol

While the natural source of PSP a mushroom, it is not a supplement and has been studied extensively in humans. It is a chemotherapeutic agent.

It has demonstrated clinical efficacy in numerous human cancer trials that have been validated by MD Anderson as well as NIH. i.e. colon, breast, lung, lymphoma etc.

The drug has been available in China (PSP) and Japan(Krestin) for over a decade.
NIH also provided lots of clinical data demonstrating it's efficacy.
The American Cancer society has also recognized it's efficacy.

US manufacturers have no incentive to promote/distribute it because the patent rights belong to the Chinese/Japanese. :? i.e. less revenue potential. Excuse my cynicism but it seems we can only have their cars/electronics not their drugs.

Numerous drugs have a natural source and are not 'supplements' ..ones which you may be familiar with are aspirin or tamoxifen for breast cancer. Aspirin is derived from willow tree bark, Tamoxifen is synthetic, and derived from the active compound in the Pacific Yew. Just as PSP is synthesized from the Yunzhi mushroom.

Thanks Suzierose...I stand corrected! I now know that PSP is not a 'supplement', but a drug used in other forms of cancer. The pharmacopeia out there is so vast...it's really interesting. Maybe someone reading here would know if PSP is being used for myeloma in some country? I am not well educated enough to know whether a drug used for leukaemia, for example, would be relevant to Myeloma. I just worry about a drug actually being 'counter productive' , so did stick with the prescriptions given.
On supplements, i read that a lot of people use curcurmin. We started adding more turmeric to our food..probably not at all in the same dose as the supplement, but it sounded to be healthy!
