Young son diagnosed with myeloma

by Carlos on Thu Dec 08, 2011 8:37 am

My 13 yr old son has been diagnosed with multiple myeloma.

The doctors have never seen it in someone so young. If there is anyone who can tell us more about this disease, please feel free to contact me. We’ve been devastated by the news and trying to stay positive.

Dear Carlos,

We are so sorry to hear that your son has been diagnosed with multiple myeloma at such a young age.

You may want to start out by reading the 'Multiple Myeloma Information' in the resources section of our website:

Best of luck to your son.

Wow, I am almost speechless. 13, that is unreal. I am very sorry to hear that. What stage is he at? What is his M-Spike and bone marrow biopsy numbers?

My wife and I were talking the other day about the age of diagnosis for multiple myeloma. While it used to be a 65-70 yr old disease, we are hearing more and more 20-40 yr olds being diagnosed. We came to the conclusion there has to be an environmental/diet factor that is triggering the multiple myeloma to manifest much earlier than it did in the past.

Stay strong. It can be very daunting, but there is a lot of information out there. Read, read, read. My wife and I have become pseudo experts in multiple myeloma and hematology in the last 6 months.

My heart goes out to you as you begin to navigate your way through your son's journey with this cancer. There are many of us here who can offer you information, our experiences and most of all love. This doesn't have to be devastating for your son. Give him as normal a life as you can and try to be as up beat as you can while being truthful with him.

Carlos, I too am speechless. I'm sure this has already been quite a journey for you and your family . I hope that you find good support here on the pages of the Myeloma Beacon. EJ and I have.

You don't say much about where you live, or how his diagnosis came about. Have you considered taking him to one of the major centers that specialize in multiple myeloma? Given that myeloma is virtually unheard of in children his age, I think it might be helpful to have a myeloma specialist working with him.

All the best. Please keep us updated on his progress. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.
