What lab result is my M-spike?

by ahughes on Mon Feb 15, 2016 3:25 pm

Hi,

I am still trying to figure out how to understand my blood work. How do you know what value your M-spike is?

My kappa / lambda free light chain ratio - serum is 4.215 mg/dl, range is (0.260-1.650). My IgM serum is 579.0 mg/dl and range is (40.0-280.0. Just had a bone marrow biopsy and aspiration a week ago, waiting on results. Was diagnosed with high-risk smoldering multiple myeloma in May 2015.

Hi AHughes,

You should be able to find the serum M-spike on your serum protein electrophoresis (SPEP) lab printout. It may be referred to in a separate notation on the SPEP test as an M-spike, M-protein, monoclonal protein, paraprotein, etc. Or, it may may also appear along with the other protein values on the SPEP test and be listed as "Abnormal Protein Band" or something similar to that.

By the way, did you note the article on IgM-related diseases that I mentioned in this forum posting?

I hope that your bone marrow biopsy results will help better pinpoint your exact diagnosis. Let us know how it turns out.
