This week's poll asks where the physician who primarily determines your myeloma-related care practices.
A few clarifications:
Institutions that would fall into the first category include all National Cancer Institute-designated Cancer Centers as well as other university cancer centers. These institutions are ones that generally focus on both treatment and research.
Institutions that would fall into the second category include cancer centers within community and private, for-profit hospitals, both of which typically focus primarily on treatment.
Institutions that would fall into the third category include standalone outpatient oncology practices as well as outpatient clinics that are part of a network. These institutions also typically focus primarily or exclusively on treatment.
You can find a list of National Cancer Institute-designated cancer centers here:

Re: Weekly Poll - Types of Treatment Centers
Mayo does not really seem to fit category 2 very well but it doesn't fit the others either.. I would not just call it a community cancer center but it is in my city...it is also not an NCCN designated center ...interesting..

Re: Weekly Poll - Types of Treatment Centers
Hi Cathy, thanks for asking about the Mayo Clinic.
This is the first time we ran a poll like this, and we admit that the wording may need some fine tuning. We hope that anyone who isn't sure what category their treatment center falls into will ask or highlight that their center doesn't fall into any of the provided categories so that we can clarify or fine tune the wording, particularly in case we run a similar poll again.
The Mayo Clinic is part of the Mayo Medical School, the Minnesota location of the Mayo Clinic is listed as an NCI-designated cancer center, and all three Mayo locations conduct research. Therefore, we'll consider all three Mayo locations (Minnesota, Arizona, and Florida) to qualify for the first category (a cancer center that is part of a university, or university-affiliated, medical center).

Re: Weekly Poll - Types of Treatment Centers
I am seen at Seattle Cancer Care Alliance: Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research; University of Washington Medical Center and Hospital; and Seattle Children's Hospital. This is more like Mayo than any of your categories. It may fit your first category or the last.

Re: Weekly Poll - Types of Treatment Centers
Yes, we definitely would recommend category 1 if you're main myeloma-related physicians are at Seattle Cancer Care Alliance -- not least because one of the centers that participates in the center (Fred Hutchinson) is an NCI-designated Cancer Center.
Re: Weekly Poll - Types of Treatment Centers
I am treated at the clinical center of the National Cancer Institute (NCI) itself in Bethesda, Maryland. It is part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). I know that a bunch of posters/readers here are as well. Dr. Landgren runs the myeloma section and he has been interviewed by the MB several times.
