I was at Mayo Scottsdale, and specially trained nurses did the biopsy....used fentanyl and
Versed I.V. This combination was wonderful....didn't mind the procedure at all...and yes,
donated some bone marrow for research, too. I would recommend this drug combination to
anyone.

Re: Weekly Poll – Pain Management For Bone Marrow Biopsies
Hi - I was given the max amt of IV Rxs to reduce anxiety and it helped a little. I was numbed, but could still feel everything. I noticed greentea (member) used the Mayo Clnic for her bone marrow aspiration. I'm wondering do you live in AZ? If so, who do you see as your oncologist? The Scottsdale Mayo Hemo group evaluated my bone and blood tests and forwarded results to my oncologist. Diane
Re: Weekly Poll – Pain Management For Bone Marrow Biopsies
2004 I was in the hospital taking lots of Morphine (under tongue) for my back pain ( 2 shattered vertebrae & 3 degenerated disks) I was given no other meds for my Bone Marrow Biopsie , a young lady accompanied by a troop of white robed Gandi-dancers entered my room carrying jacks, picks & timbers ,after they got set up she proceeded to extract my bone marrow from my left hip with what I believe was a medium sharp Rail Road Spike driven by a 20 lb Maul , not much in the way of pain but the impact of that maul sent shock waves rippling out in all directions from the point of impact , I could invision the Golden Spike being driven into a Rail Road tie where the Transcontinental Rail system was tied together & Indians 500 miles away putting their ear to the rail to listen to the sound and accompanying that sound with their tom toms. The amount of Morphine was enough that I was seeing visions of Spiders with legs the size of Bananas peeking out of the cabinet beside my bed ,they were pretty shy though and as soon as I looked at them they would scurry back into their hiding hole . This has been my one and only Bone Marrow extraction to date , after the extraction I was treated with Thalodmide & Dex for 10 months . I do go in for blood tests every 4 months and so far so good as far as the multiple myeloma goes. N.G.

Re: Weekly Poll – Pain Management For Bone Marrow Biopsies
I've had two biopsies done. The First one was a terrible experience. I had to lie down on my left side no matter what. The Doctor didn't care that I had surgery due to a pathological fracture of my left femur a few weeks earlier. (solitary bone plasmacytoma). They gave me local anesthesia but didn't wait more than ten seconds before penetrating the bone with the needle. This was late january 2010. My second one was in june 2011. A more experienced doctor performed the biopsy under local anesthesia. This time a 5 min pause after the la injection made the effect to kick in before the biopsy needle were inserted. It wasn't a comfortable experience but hardly painful. I was lucky the second time as well. It was another solitary plamacytoma, this time in a vertebra. The docs were certain that it was multiple myeloma before the biopsy and MRI proved them wrong.

Re: Weekly Poll – Pain Management For Bone Marrow Biopsies
Hi All,
I have had one bone marrow biopsey/aspiration. My hematologist (specializes in multiple myeloma) did the procedure. I was asked if I wanted any pain killer or anxiety med. along with the local. Not knowing what the procedure was like, I chose to have everything available. I am so glad I did. She (my doc) was very good doing the test but it still was uncomfortable especially the pressure she had to use. The nurse held my hand and the doctor herself was comforting.

Re: Weekly Poll – Pain Management For Bone Marrow Biopsies
I've just been diagnosed with follicular lymphoma and my oncologist said a bone marrow aspiration is necessary as part of the staging process. It terrifies me, as my dad passed away back in 1971 of bone cancer and I remember what he went through. Can I ask for fentanyl and other pain meds prior to the procedure? Also curious about those that have mentioned the drill method. Thank you so much for your input!

Re: Weekly Poll – Pain Management For Bone Marrow Biopsies
Hi Dee, I have had two separate BMB's and, while they are no walk in the park, they are tolerable, especially if done by an experienced practitioner. My second BMB even included taking an additional vial of aspirate for research. The procedure is quick and you will walk out of the room of your own accord and will be able to work, drive, etc. I only had local anesthesia for both. Perhaps, a xanax prior would help. All in all, they reall were not bad. It is the anxiety beforehand that is the problem. Good luck. Terry

Hello Dee,
I too, was recently diagnosed with follicular NH Lymphoma. The discomfort depends on the practioner. My oncologist was great. He did my BMB very slowly and when the discomfort became too much, he stopped and gave me more numbing meds. He also explained everything before and during the procedure which helped a lot.
Don't hesitate to asked to be numbed more! It was explained to me that some get the BMB very quickly and other's more slowly.
Good luck to you! Let's try to connect, share experiences and support each other through this!

Re: Weekly Poll – Pain Management For Bone Marrow Biopsy - 2
I mostly had no pain help at all. That hurt!! But my last one was at Mayo Clinic and they had to do another biopsy so they put me in a chair where I was twisted to one side and put me right out! I wish more people did that!
