This week’s poll is about myeloma's impact on people's retirement plans.
A few clarifications:
Have you changed your retirement plans for any myeloma-related reasons, such as wanting to spend more time with family or pursuing hobbies because of your diagnosis; inability to work due to your health, frequent medical appointments, or treatment-related side effects; financial reasons such as retaining current health insurance; or any other myeloma-related reasons.
If you are a caregiver or family member of a myeloma patient, feel free to answer on their behalf.
As always, feel free to post comments, thoughts, or feedback in the space below. They can be very useful to other readers.

Re: Weekly Poll - Myeloma And Retirement
We are retired and had planned to travel somewhat and also to rent a place in Florida to flee the cold winters. But with treatment and doctor visits, we will put that money into our home and just enjoy staying here with eachother.
Re: Weekly Poll - Myeloma And Retirement
My husband is 55 and was diagnosed 1 year ago. He had always diligently saved for his retirement. He also carried excellent disability insurance as he is self employed. He is now working part-time. We owned a little lake cottage in our same town and had planned to tear it down and build our retirement home. Today we sold the cottage. Friday we close on our new permanent house - a previously lived in house on the same lake. We had also looked forward to traveling in retirement. We instead are going to do as much of that as possible now; while his health is good and his bones are in good shape. Of course we wish he had never gotten this lousy disease, but we do also try to appreciate the few benefits it has brought. He always said that he would like his job - if he only did it two days a week, and that is what he is doing.

Re: Weekly Poll - Myeloma And Retirement
Had prostatectomy for cancer in '06, followed by radiation (IMRT) when my PSA spiked in '07 and retired at age 60 in '08. Life is too short. Luckily my employer provided continuation of health benefits to make this possible. Survived melanoma in '09. My wife and I travel domestically from FL for several months each year. Drove the Alcan Hwy in '10. My diagnosis in Mar '11 is smoldering IgG kappa and I continue symptom-free without progression. My faith and friends help me remain positive and willing to try different adventures. For me, volunteering helps me stop wallowing in my own mental dung.
