Weekly Poll – IV Velcade And Peripheral Neuropathy

by Beacon Staff on Wed Feb 15, 2012 1:13 pm

This week’s question focuses on the severity of peripheral neuropathy (PN) caused by intravenous Velcade.

Peripheral neuropathy is a type of nerve damage that can cause numbness, tingling, or pain in the extremities.

A few clarifications:

First, this question is for readers who have been treated with intravenous Velcade (bortezomib), sometimes referred to as IV Velcade. If you have only been treated with subcutaneous Velcade, sometimes referred to as subQ or subcu Velcade, please do not answer this question. If you have been treated with both intravenous and subcutaneous Velcade, answer based on the severity of your peripheral neuropathy while on intravenous Velcade only.

Second, if you are a caregiver or family member of a patient who has been treated with intravenous Velcade, feel free to answer on their behalf.

As always, feel free to post comments, thoughts, or feedback in the space below. They can be very useful to other readers.

Re: Weekly Poll – IV Velcade And Peripheral Neuropathy Week

I had been on IV Velcade for over 2 1/2 years and was switched over to SC injection at the begining of the year. I originally was receiving a weekly IV of Velcade but after about 6 months it was changed to bi-weekly. I never had PR with the infusions so the switch has not had an impact to me in that regard. However, a shot is lot quicker with less bruising on my arms than the IV.

At first I had a little bit of heat on the tops of my feet, then as I was given the injections twice a week for the first two cycles I started getting pain in my calf muscles that eventually got quite unbearable. I now take Gabapectin 300 mg three times a day to aleiviate the pain. Hope I don't have to go too much longer at twice a week. It seems to lessen on the week I am off the injections between cycles. My protein marker seems to be going down slowly.

After only four cycles of Velcade I developed severe pain in both feet and legs. Velcade was stopped and I was given morphine for the pain. The symptoms were not alleviated and so was started on Amitriptiline at night plus Fentanyl. I then started Pregabalin. My current treatment, six months after the PN started is Amitriptiline at night, 150mgs of Pregabalin twice daily and 75 mcg/hour Fentanyl patches. I am still seriously limited in the amont of walking and even sitting that I can do.

Boleynbloke, I have experienced what you are going through. I was also given morphine for pain as well as the Fentanyi patches. My neuropathy is still severe after stopping Velcade. I am having to use a walker, my left side is still weaker than the right after physical therapy. I will not use Velcade again because of the side effects tat my doctor never told me about. I wonder if we are the only ones with this problem?

Liz, we're not alone, but we're certainly in a small minority according to the results of this poll
