Weekly Poll - Infection At Myeloma Diagnosis

by Beacon Staff on Wed Mar 13, 2013 10:30 am

This week’s poll is to find out what percent of people had an infection at the time they were diagnosed with multiple myeloma. Infection is a common symptom of myeloma.

A few clarifications:

This poll is for anyone who has been diagnosed with symptomatic / active multiple myeloma (not smoldering myeloma or MGUS). If you are a caregiver or family member of a myeloma patient, feel free to answer on their behalf.

As always, feel free to post comments, thoughts, or feedback in the space below. They can be very useful to other readers.

I had an urinary tract infection that was quickly cleared with antibiotics. When it was clear, I questioned why the protien component of my urine test showed protien as +1, when norm was 0. That led to a referral to a kidney doctor and then a Hematologist/Oncologist who diagnosed me with IGD multiple myeloma. Happy to say that 10 months later I am in total remission! It pays to question test results! : )

My husband had an URI, and an ear infection that was so severe that his ear drum ruptured. The ENT commented that it was really "weird" for an adult to have an ear infection like that. Some routine labs the next month then began the work up that led to the diagnosis.

During the 6 months prior to my diagnosis, I had kidney stones and a terrible URI/sinus infection. It felt as if it was one illness after another during that time.

6 months prior to diagnosis I had a "nasty cold" and with my coughing either tore the muscles between the ribs or broke a rib. A friend who is a doctor said at that time that it would be unlikely that I would have broken a rib unless there was something seriously wrong! The other thing at that time was I had a recurrence of hand, foot & mouth disease.

My husband had total knee replacement eight weeks prior to his diagnosis of myeloma.
He had been diagnosed with MGUS three years prior to the myeloma diagnosis and at that time had been hospitalized with what the pulmonoloigst thought might be BOOP (rather than pneumonia). He also had had a severe case of shingles with continuing post herpetic neuralgia several years prior to the MGUS diagnosis.

I had an elevated sed rate that kept climbing higher. My Primary Care Doc said that I probably had an infection somewhere, but she couldn't find it. More blood tests led to the finding of the elevated protein level and the referrel to an oncologist/hemotologist for the myeloma diagnosis.
