Weekly Poll – Hypothyroidism & MGUS - 2014

by Beacon Staff on Tue Oct 07, 2014 7:22 am

The newest set of Beacon Weekly Polls concerns hypothyroidism in people with MGUS, smoldering myeloma, and multiple myeloma.

A few important clarifications about this week's poll:

First, this particular poll is for people who have been diagnosed with MGUS.

There are two additional polls being run in parallel to this one, one for people diagnosed with smoldering myeloma (link to poll), and one for people diagnosed with multiple myeloma (link to poll). You may answer those polls as well as this one if you eventually were diagnosed with smoldering myeloma and/or multiple myeloma after your MGUS diagnosis.

Second, please choose the appropriate “yes” response to the poll question only if you were diagnosed with hypothyroidism and you and your doctor decided it was necessary to treat the condition with a synthetic hormone, such as levothyroxine (Synthroid, Levoxyl, Levothroid, Eltroxin, etc.), or with a natural thyroid hormone.

Please answer “no” if you have never been diagnosed with hypothyroidism, or if you were diagnosed with mild hypothyroidism that does not require treatment.

Third, if you are a caregiver or family member of an MGUS patient, feel free to answer on their behalf.

As always, feel free to post comments, thoughts, or feedback about this week's poll in the space below. They can be very useful to other readers.

I have multiple myeloma diagnosed in 2008. Presently off of drugs since June 2013 .

My question is, what is MGUS?

Thanks

MGUS stands for monoclonal gammopathy of unknown significance. The plasma cells are abnormal, as they are in multiple myeloma, but they have not and may not start replicating uncontrollably. If they did, it would then be multiple myeloma.

Just found this site today. I have MGUS & was diagnosed with hypothyroidism 18 years before my MGUS diagnosis. My mom was hypothyroid for about 6 years before her multiple myeloma diagnosis. We both are/were treated for it with Synthroid.

I've never heard of a correlation between these two disorders; is there supposedly one?

Thanks, carideb

Diagnosed with subclinical hypothyroid around 2007 and put on medication. Diagnosed with MGUS around 2014 (IgA kappa).
