Welcome to another edition of The Myeloma Beacon’s “Weekly Poll”.
This week’s question is about what you knew about myeloma before you were diagnosed with it.
A few clarifications:
First, this question is intended for readers who have either active or smoldering multiple myeloma, as well as caregivers and relatives of myeloma patients.
Second, if you are a caregiver or relative of a myeloma patient, please answer focusing on what *you* knew about myeloma at the time your relative or the person you care for was diagnosed with myeloma.
Once you have answered the question above, feel free to add whatever comments you feel might be relevant in the discussion below.
For those interested in comparing these results with those from a year ago, here are the results from the 2011 version of this poll:

Re: Weekly Poll - How Much Did You Know About Multiple Myelo
My husband is a physician. When he was diagnosed, he worked with an anesthesiologist that had multiple myeloma. He was also aware of a nurse in the OR that had undergone a transplant 8 years before for multiple myeloma. One of his office nurse's husband was undergoing treatment for multiple myeloma. Since then, we've learned of another man in our neighborhood with it, and a man at our church underwent his transplant for multiple myeloma in the last year. I read an analogy somewhere that stuck with me ... it's like if you buy a yellow car. You never realize how many yellow cars are out there, until you get one. (Or maybe our town has some weird thing that's causing a lot of multiple myeloma!)

Re: Weekly Poll - How Much Did You Know About Multiple Myelo
I knew of multiple myeloma since a friend's husband had passed away from it. She was from my book club. Also the husband of a friend in my choir, ditto. And the father of another friend. I didn't really understand that much about it, except that it was a blood cancer. Then, a friend of mine in a group that we both belong to, had a dx about a year ahead of me. That really got my attention, and to my surprise, I also was diagnosed in '09. Since then, I have become aware of other friends or other folks who have been diagnosed. We all agree that it is not as rare as the statistiics show! (However un-mathematical that may seem!). I agree though that it is the 'yellow Volkswagen' effect...you won't learn much about it unless it affects you directly, or unless you are a health care professional dealing with blood cancer patients.

I had heard of it because I follow politics somewhat and remember Geraldine Ferraro talking about it and her struggle with it. She was great and I miss her.
