It's time for a new Myeloma Beacon "Weekly Poll". The topic of this week's poll question is stem cell transplants.
As usual, there are a few clarifications.
First, this question is for readers who have active multiple myeloma (that is, not smoldering myeloma, and not MGUS).
Second, if you are a caregiver or family member of someone who has active myeloma, feel free to answer on their behalf
Third, just as a reminder:
- An "auto" (autologous) transplant is one where a patient's own stem cells -- harvested at an earlier date -- are transplanted back into the patient's body.
- An "allo" (allogeneic) transplant is one where stem cells from a donor are transplanted into the patient's body.
Fourth, "mini allo" transplants should be counted as an "allo" transplant for the purpose of this poll.
As always, feel free to post comments, thoughts, or feedback in the space below. They can be very useful to other readers.

Re: Weekly Poll - Have You Had A Stem Cell Transplant?
I haven't had a transplant yet but am scheduled to have my first one in three weeks. My stem cells were harvested in 2007 and I have gone through two treat regimes (Thalidomide and Revlimid). I'm now on Velcade, cytoxan and dex to get my numbers down.

I'm also planning on my first SCT in about 3 weeks. I've been through 2 rounds of Vel/Cy/dex and am in CR, awaiting BMB results. However, more important PET scan show no active Myeloma present. Had several plasmacytomas, foot, sternum, back that have disappeared during the Chemo.
Side effects of the chemo have been minimal. No neuropathology, so I'm anxious to move forward with the transplant and avoid further use of Velcade.
Amazingly, suffered a broken clavicle and fracture ribs from a car crash only 4 weeks ago. Hit and run driver was fleeing the scene when he blindsided and totaled our car. This was near the end of the 2nd chemo cycle and apparently the multiple myeloma was already in CR. Bones have been healing, which is a great relief.

Hi Rad,
I'm glad I read your post.
My foot has been unexpectedly hurting for 2 weeks. It feels like a bone bruise in my heel--and it might be just that.
I didn't know plasmocytomas occurred in the feet. I'll get it checked out. Thanks.

Surgery on my foot led to the discovery of the multiple myeloma. The plasmacytoma appeared at the main joint of the the first metatarsal joint. I probably suffered a small stress fracture during a 5 mile trail race. The process of repairing the bone was disrupted by multiple myeloma. It took about 3 months for the turmor to eat away 40% of that rather large bone in the foot. As a result I have a big chunk of cement there until we get through the transplant. Then I'll need some repair as the foot gets inflamed after any serious walking or riding.
Good luck to all.

For readers interested in whether or not allo transplants are a viable treatment option, there is an interesting discussion about that subject that has taken place over in the forum thread about this year's ASH Meeting abstracts. Here is a link to the thread:

Not yet, but it's in the works. Talking with John's Hopkins and looking for insurance options to pay for it. Hopefully around the first of the year I will get one. Auto.
