I just had a bone marrow biopsy (Sep 7, 2016). It was done in hospital by a nurse practitioner; very talented and gentle. The worse pain was finding the hip bone; then two injections of lidocaine, which became effective immediately. I was originally suppose to have sedation (twilight sleep), but chose to do lidocaine, which was enough pain control. You feel pressure and tugging during aspiration and biopsy, but the other nurse rubbed my back and talked me through all. Very kind nurses and you have to be in recovery for 10-15 minutes to check bleeding and pressure. Not something one wants to do everyday, but you have to do this to keep living.
Reason for biopsy: enlarged spleen (13.5 cm), high red blood count, and high hematocrit.
Best of luck to all!

Re: Weekly Poll – Bone Marrow Biopsies And Pain - 2013
My first bone marrow biopsy was done in my hospital bed just post diagnosis. Really no pain to speak of. I took a walk in the park within an hour. A little sore butt / hip. The second I opted for sedation. Both were early on. I did Zometa for 2 years. Should I require another bone marrow biopsy, I will do sedation. Thank you, bone marrow biopsy pioneers.
