Weekly Poll - Age At Diagnosis For MGUS - 2012

by Beacon Staff on Wed Jul 11, 2012 9:39 am

This week's question is for all our readers who currently have, or were previously diagnosed with, monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS).

The question is: How old were you when you were diagnosed with MGUS?

A few clarifications:

First, this question is only for readers who either (a) currently have MGUS, or (b) were diagnosed with MGUS before their disease progressed to smoldering multiple myeloma or active multiple myeloma.

Second, if you are a caregiver or family member of someone who falls into either category (a) or (b) above, feel free to answer on their behalf

Third, we are interested in how old you were at that point in time when you received the definitive diagnosis that you have MGUS.

As always, feel free to post comments, thoughts, or feedback in the space below. They can be very useful and interesting to other readers.

As unwelcomed anniversaries go, I will have my 1yr of having MGUS this month. Yuck, but I'm glad that the disorder was found and is being monitored. I'm just keeping good thoughts, and going on with life. I only think about the MGUS when it is time to do testing.

I was told I had mgus 3 weeks ago, But I knew there was something wrong for about a year now,I am only 43 so when I was having these really bad ankle and back pains that will not go away I went to see my doctor,my doctor did blood tests that came back with a high m spike of 5 he then told me I need to see a blood specialist had more blood tests when they came back my m spike was up again too 7 not sure what this means,I was then told I needed a bone marrow biopsy, full sketeal survey and an M.R.I,still waiting on some results,my m spike has now go down after I had the bone marrow biopsy also do not know if this is good or bad waiting on blood test results only done last week too see if the m spike has gone up again,I hope some one can explain any of this to me because I am lost and worried.

I was diagnosed with MGUS in 2008 just 1 week before christmas. Not a fun christmas at all. When I was first diagnosed my protein level was 2500 and my percentage was 7. I can't remember what the m spike was at that point only that it was higher then normal for my age. Now 4 years later my protein level is 3000, my m spike is 2.5 and my white count is really low, and as of last year my percentage level was 8.

When I was 36 years old and in routine tests for a slimming regimen showed an abnormality in the protein profile my monoclonal peak was 2.4 grams. My endocrinologist told me that that was not important, it was due to an inflammation of a tooth or menstruation and warned me of the importance of this anomaly. Nine years later myeloma appeared in all its harshness in my life: IGg kappa, stage III, front plasmacytoma with cranial destruction. Now I know how important it would have been to know that information in your time.It has had no treatment but continued surveillance. I am currently in RC after a hard chemotherapy, radiation therapy, stem cells bone marrow transplant and skull operation. I'm fine but I would have liked to know, at the time, that this anomaly in a M protein profile could be a myeloma in the future, as it has been. Monitoring is very important in MGUS.
I'm from Spain, I have a wonderful doctor, and I hope to live with myeloma as long as possible, I am 49 years and two children and in November will be met four years of my diagnosis of multiple myeloma. Three years ago, in the month of June, I performed the stem cells bone marrow transplant.
A lot of strength to all.

I am 35 and was diagnosed with MGUS today. I had more blood work done today and a full body survey. I am nervous about this, but my doctor assured me that I am young and should not worry so much. I will go every year for her to check everything to make sure everything is ok. Does this all sound right?
