This week’s poll is part of the series The Beacon is running that asks about comorbidities (additional health issues) that affect people with multiple myeloma, smoldering myeloma, and monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS). Comorbidities are important because they can affect how patients are monitored or treated and because they can affect survival.
This week’s poll is about other types of cancer.
A few clarifications:
First, this poll is open to anyone who has been diagnosed with multiple myeloma, smoldering myeloma, or MGUS. If you are a caregiver or family member of a patient, feel free to answer on their behalf.
Second, if you were first diagnosed with MGUS or smoldering myeloma and then progressed. Please answer based on whether you were diagnosed with another cancer before or after your initial MGUS/smoldering myeloma/myeloma diagnosis. For example, if you were first diagnosed with MGUS, then another cancer, then smoldering myeloma, please vote for "I was diagnosed with another type of cancer after my myeloma/smoldering myeloma/MGUS diagnosis."
As always, feel free to post comments, thoughts, or feedback in the space below. They can be very useful to other readers. In particular, feel free to share what other type of cancer you have been diagnosed with, whether you feel there is a connection between your cancers, and whether one cancer impacted the treatment of the other.

Re: Weekly Poll - Additional Cancers
I'm not sure if it is relevant, but I was diagnosed with adenocarcinoma lung cancer in 2001 and during testing CLL was found, I had surgery as a treatment. In 2003 I was diagnosed and treated for prostate cancer.
I do wonder if there is any correlation between the CLL and my multiple myeloma, but I think the others are simply separate diseases.

Re: Weekly Poll - Additional Cancers
In october 1991, I was diagnosed with Diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (non-Hodgkin lymphoma) prior to my MGUS and amyloidosis diagnosis in April 2011. I had in 1991 MACOP-B chemo, a very difficult drugs weekly chemotherapy, that I had for 12 weeks. I am in complete remission of my NHL since the end of my treatments in 1992.

Re: Weekly Poll - Additional Cancers
There really wasn't a catagory for me. My smolding myeloma was diagnosed at the same time as my type IiB breast cancer. At that time the breast cancer was the first concern and I had heavy chemo followed by surgery and heavy radiation. Breast cancer in temission The chemo brought the myeloma numbers back down but in two years the myeloma had become active and HR. I had SCT a year ago Nov.
No cancer in either side of my family for 5 generations until my sister also had breast cancer a few years befor me..

Re: Weekly Poll - Additional Cancers
I was 5 years ago diagnosed with a prostate-cancer and had a prostatectomy .
During the following 3-monthly control was a decreasing blood-% recorded and 3 years ago I was diagnosed with multiple myeloma and treated VelDex to CR for 14 months and VelCyrDex to VGPR. Then 1 year ago I was diagnosed with skincancer and had 2 "spots" removed in surgery.
So: a cancer before and a cancer after the multiple myeloma, not foreseen in the weekly poll, so I voted: 1 before multiple myeloma!

Re: Weekly Poll - Additional Cancers
I was diagnosed with myeloma in 2004, in 2006 I started on Revlimid/decadron. After about three months I was only on Revlimid until I was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia in August of 2012 . The Revlimid was stopped and I was admitted to the hospital and put on 7+3 chemo for the AML I have been told there could be.connection between them Revlimid and my coming down with AML. I'm wondering if anyone has had a similar experience? I am now in remission but am on decidabene to keep me in remission. YEAH!!!

Re: Weekly Poll - Additional Cancers
hello, i'm answering on behalf of my brother, aged 50, plasmocytoma since aug 5th 2013. on dec 10th he'll be operated on his thymus, cancer there but according to the doctors it's an independent one. it was detected before the plasmocytoma yet my brother waited for a good year - and now it seemingly has to be taken care of. i wonder what impact we can expect - hormones being part of the game?
in my family a line of cancer: my father prostate cancer with pretty many metastasis, my mother breast and skin - she's in great shape though, aged 81.
apart: oncles and aunts with all different sorts of cancer.
best wishes to everyone!
