Weekly Poll - 1st Remission With Transplant

by Beacon Staff on Wed Jan 22, 2014 3:24 pm

This week’s poll and next week's poll are about how long first remission lasts for myeloma patients. This week's poll is open to myeloma patients who underwent stem cell transplantation as part of their initial therapy and asks how long their first remission lasted. Next week's poll will be open to myeloma patients who delayed transplantation until after relapse or who decided not to undergo stem cell transplantation and will ask how long their first remission lasted.

A few clarifications:

First, this poll is open to anyone diagnosed with multiple myeloma who underwent stem cell transplantation as part of their initial therapy. If you are a caregiver or family member of a myeloma patient who meets this criteria, feel free to answer on their behalf.

Second, patients who undergo stem cell transplantation as part of their initial therapy may have received chemotherapy, treatment with novel agents, and/or radiation to reduce the number of myeloma cells prior to stem cell transplantation. Transplantation as part of initial therapy, however, is given prior to disease relapse or progression. If your myeloma relapsed or progressed prior to stem cell transplantation, then you should participate in next week's poll.

Third, the length of your first remission should be calculated from the time you first achieved a response (or stable disease if that's the best you achieved) until the time you first relapsed (such as a definitive rise in your M-spike).

As always, feel free to post comment, thoughts, or feedback in the space below. For example, what treatments did you receive prior to your stem cell transplant? Did you receive consolidation or maintenance therapy after your stem cell transplant? If you are still in remission after your first transplant, how long has it been? If you have had multiple remissions and relapses, how long have your later remissions lasted?

I'm glad the polls are back. I've missed them.

I had Rev/Dex as induction therapy followed by ASCT. I started maintenance with Rev at 100 days post transplant, but had to discontinue it 5 days later because of a bad reaction. I had no drugs other than Zometa every 6 weeks during the time between 105 days and relapse when I restarted Rev/Dex with good results.

Hi Beacon Staff

I haven't had a transplant yet. Just initial CTD. I'm currently in remission and the plan is to have a transplant on relapse. I would be very interested to know how long people have stayed in remission from initial treatment alone. Is that a poll you would consider running?

As a person who had a stem cell transplant 3 months ago (I'm at day 84), I was very happy and encouraged to see that 54% of respondents are still in remission. But I can't help thinking wouldn't it be good to know about the 54% who are currently in remission: how long have they been in remission, months, years?

Alice and redshift, thanks for your comments and questions.

Alice - The poll that you suggested is actually the one that we are running this week. Feel free to vote and check out the results:

redshift - Indeed, it would be interesting to know how long those who are still in remission have been in remission. In order to give people a picture of how long they might likely stay in remission, though, we didn't want the votes of people who only recently got into remission to get lumped in with those who have seen the full duration of their remission. Therefore, we designed the poll as we did. There is a recent poll, though, that will likely interest you. It's similar in nature to what you suggested:
If you are still in remission after your first stem cell transplant, how long ago was your transplant?

Feel free to suggest topics for polling any time!
