Venclexta (venetoclax) & nasal congestion / stuffiness

by vthuronyi on Wed Jan 30, 2019 9:23 pm

I am taking Venclexta (venetoclax) and dexamethasone. One of the things I have been experiencing is a stuffiness in the nose. It is not really a build up of mucus, but breathing through one nostril or both is impaired.

Is this unusual with Venclexta? How can the side effect be managed?

I started using fluticasone (Flonase) spray when I was on Revlimid and it helped. I have continued it on Venclexta and haven’t had much mucus. Also my doctor suggested Mucinex (oxymetazoline) but haven’t needed to switch. Best! BN

When I got an infusion of denosumab (Xgeva, Prolia), the nurse explained that all monoclonal antibodies are processed the same way, not through the liver, but through other organs. She didn't explain more. They pre-load patients with antihistamine to minimize upper airway edema or other respiratory symptoms. My doctor and pharmacist agreed upon Claritin (loratadine) for me. You might want to ask about this for you.

Hope it works for you.

Hi faithoverfear,

I'm a little confused by your post because I don't see how it's really relevant to the question Bar-none asked at the beginning of this discussion. Venclexta is an orally administered, small molecule drug. It's not a monoclonal antibody. Also, neither of the two other drugs Bar-none is getting as part of his current treatment regimen (Kyprolis and dex) are monoclonal antibodies.

What am I missing?

Terry is correct that I am not getting a monoclonal antibody. This thread did jog my memory regarding another drug that they preload. They give me Zofran (ondansetron) for nausea prior to infusing the Kyprolis and Zometa.

FYI, I have switched to the generic fluticasone (Flonase) nasal spray available at my local wholesale club and it is working great.

Best! BN
