Stroke and diabetes while on Velcade

Hi, my name is Tina. My mum has multiple myeloma and has had it for 8 years now. She has been having Velcade for this. Unfortunately, she had a stroke last week and has developed mild diabetes.

Does anyone know of anyone else developing these problems?

Tina: Sorry to hear about your Mum. I hope that the stroke was not too serious and that she recovers.

Stroke can be a side effect of the multiple myeloma disease itself. See:

"Patients with multiple myeloma (multiple myeloma) are at elevated risk of venous thrombo­embolism (VTE), specifically deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE)".

The above conditions can in turn lead to stroke.

IMIDS such as Revlimid can also increase the risk of stroke, but proteasome inhibitors like Velcade haven't been implicated.

While I've not heard of diabetes being a side effect of Velcade or multiple myeloma, diabetes in multiple myeloma patients is expected to be on the rise simply because diabetes is on the rise in our population. See:

The stroke is unlikely related to Velcade. Other drugs such as thalidomide and Revlimid can increase the risk of stroke, but this has not been a concern with Velcade.

Developing diabetes can be a consequence of drugs used such as dexamethasone or prednisone, and diabetes does increase the risk of stroke.
