My dad and I met with his oncologist yesterday. My dad is having trouble tolerating chemo (bortezomib / Velcade) and was on the second lowest dose. The latest CT scan shows no change in tumours. The one in his head is the biggest concern right now.
We asked what would happen if we stopped chemo. The doctor informed us dad would get sick very quickly. This confuses us, as my dad has tumours but his proteins are good, no kidney involvement, and his plasma cells are only 3 percent. He does have other health issues and the chemo is making him really dangerously sick. His neutrophils are too low right now to even resume chemo.
Is his myeloma worse than we thought if he would get sick fast if chemo stopped?
We are going to try the very lowest dose but his neuropathy is so bad now he's having trouble walking. I know there are alternatives but am told not as effective as bortezomib.
I feel like my dad is going downhill really fast even though his numbers say otherwise. How can this be?
