Re: Velcade - possible neuropathy, but not sure

Hello All,

I just wanted to update a little on my foot pain and ache, probably neuropathy. I really have very little numbness, but have some pretty good ache in my feet and lower legs. Almost like I have been standing all day at work.

Dr. Valent posted that the neuropathy could begin around 4 to 6 treatments. I am at 5, so that seems to go hand in hand with what he posted. It's great to have these doctors help with the questions we all have, like Dr. Valent. Thank You To All The Doctors Here On The Beacon!

I recently had my visit with a podiatrist / surgeon who gave me a very detailed explanation of how the sensory nerves work in relation the the brain's reaction. I learned quite alot. He is sure that the Velcade is the real issue, but, after he did a huge amount of tests to my feet and legs, he is confident that i could continue with my treatments if needed, but possibly at a lower dose.

Due to my feet having a very high arch, he is going to cast me some shoes and make some inserts that will help. He also had some samples of 75 mg Lyrica that he suggested trying. He asked my oncologist first if that would be ok. So, with his approval, I started taking the Lyrica twice per day at 75 mg.

I must say that, after about 2 hours of taking the first capsule, I felt about 90% pain free. I was a little light headed for about an hour or so, but it really feels much better.

There are quite a number of independent articles spelling out PN signs, symptoms, treatments, etc. Avail yourself of those articles.

Could you please give a reference to those articles? I am searching these forums for that exact information. I'm just starting my second round of VRD after a new diagnosis in February 2015. I have some neck, hands, and feet arthritis and have always had short episodes of numbness and tingling in hands and feet, So I want to differentiate that from any side effect of this treatment.

Thank you.

You need to monitor this very closely. The most common time to develop Velcade neuropathy is cycles 4-6 of treatment. If symptoms persist, perhaps talk to your doctor about changing to once a week dosing, or getting a dose reduction.

Dr. Valent: Thanks for your comment. I need a little clarification. Do you mean 4-6 monthly cycles or number of treatments. I am taking weekly treatments. So, 4-6 cycles means 16 -24 treatments?
Thanks for your help.
