There are a bunch of tools on the Internet to do "steroid conversions", and they seem to suggest that, in general terms, 1 mg of dex is equivalent to about 6.5 mg of prednisone.
They also say that dex is considered a longer-acting steroid, while prednisone is viewed as an intermediate-acting steroid. (Wikipedia says the half life of dex is about 190 minutes while prednisone's is about 60 minutes.)
I wonder if the longer half life of dexamethasone is one reason it is generally considered the more effective of the two steroids?
Also, maybe your doctor's statement that 1 mg of dex is equivalent to 10 mg of prednisone is based more on the anti-myeloma impact of the two drugs, while the general conversion (1 mg dex = 6.5 mg prednisone) is for their other uses?
