Velcade-Doxil not going well - alternatives?

by lwhitcomb on Fri Sep 12, 2014 7:40 pm

Hi,

My 71 year old mother was just diagnosed in June with multiple myeloma (stage 3) and kidney failure. She was always very healthy and active until this point. She is on dialysis 3 times a week.

Her first round of chemo was with Cytoxan (cyclophosphamide) and Velcade. No results, so she was switched to Doxil and Velcade. She has had 4 cycles of this combo. Recently the doctor said he doesn't feel like it is working fast enough. He may switch her to Revlimid, pending the next blood results. Her protein levels were around 20,000 when diagnosed and now are around 7 or 8,000 at last blood test.

My mother is miserable -- nausea, stomach cramps, and diarrhea. Not to mention major loss of appetite and energy. She has been in the hospital a couple of times with severe stomach cramps etc. And she has had 4 or 5 blood transfusions.

She and I want to know if she stopped the chemo and kept up the dialysis, what would her prognosis be. Should she try Revlimid?

Any thoughts and ideas would be appreciated.

Thank you.
